Recently I’ve been on a tech cast together with Muzaffar from TechNave, hosted by KL Gadget Guy’s very own Warren Lee. On the latest episode – which you can tune in below – we talked about our top picks on what are the best gadgets you can get for your loved ones – or even yourself, this Christmas.
Here is my list of top 3 gadgets you can get now in Malaysia.
1. OnePlus One
Starting off with a smartphone, I chose the critically acclaimed OnePlus One. I’ve been using it for quite a long time (check out my review here!), and all I have to say is that even with specs that isn’t the best in the smartphone industry today, it still performs like a champ.
Yes, I have mentioned in the video that I got the China imported version, which doesn’t have the CyanogenMod logo at the back of the phone. However, there is something to note here – 4G LTE bands are the same in China and Malaysia, so you’ll be able to get all your magical internet speeds. Also, you can still use CM11S on the China imported version, so where’s the difference??
I did mention that I got the China version of the OnePlus One. There are quite a number of grey importers in Malaysia, but I got it particularly from DirectD because of their price. Visiting their shop at Subang SS15 however might pose an issue for many of us, as that place is just too cramped up. Alternatives are SatuGadget and also Lazada, which you can place an order right at their website.
A true flagship killer (prior date from the Note 4) for as low as half of high-end smartphone prices – there’s no way you can be wrong.
2. Lenovo Y50-70
As gaming laptops are becoming the replacement for multimedia laptops, most of the gaming laptops are just plain bulky and heavy. Lenovo however trimmed out the fat while still keeping the elegance of a multimedia laptop – even added a few enhancements to the laptop.
Lenovo Y50-70 has some of the best combinations of a gaming and multimedia laptop – a subwoofer for all your media consumption and an Accutype keyboard which is exclusive to Lenovo (and I love it a lot!).
Given the guts of the highest end laptop, there’s an Intel i7-4710HQ processor, 8GB of DDR3 RAM, and NVIDIA GTX860M graphics. For its most basic model, this 15.6-inch laptop costs RM3,599 and comes with a 1080p resolution screen and has no operating system. However if you do upgrade it to the RM4,699 version, you get a 4K resolution display and 16GB of RAM instead of just 8GB.
The most amazing feature is that you get all these while weighing only at 2.5kg. Wow. The only tradeoff for being slim and light is the one thing that everyone starts to break away from – an optical drive. No DVDs or Blu-Rays for the Lenovo Y50-70. But seriously, I can live with that with no issues at all.
3. NAD VISO HP20
Generally I’m more of a stereo speaker type of guy, but this NAD VISO HP20 is the one and only pair of earphones that makes me want to get one so badly. I reviewed this pair of earphones some time ago, and till today I still love it a lot.
It’s truly comfortable, frequency response is excellent, the build quality is superb, and most importantly, soundstage is magnificent. It just seems like everything is perfect with this pair of earphones – I can’t find any flaw at all.
But wait – the NAD VISO HP20 might have one major flaw, which is the price. Jaben Malaysia is selling them for RM599. Hefty price to pay for a pair of earphones, but I’m sure it’s justifiable in every aspect.
A short comparison with the Xiaomi Piston earphones though is the much expanded soundstage, much better build quality, no cable friction noise, better frequency response, and most important point is the comfort of wearing them for prolonged hours. The NAD VISO HP20 simply makes you feel like you’re in a middle of a concert watching a live performance when you close your eyes, whereas the Xiaomi Piston earphones still sound like there are coming from 2 audio drivers.
