The Apple iPhone Duo went on sale about 3 days ago, and you know, with every hot topic or product that takes over the world, scammers are already trying to cash in, because Kaspersky says it has detected numerous scam attempts aimed at buyers chasing early access to the device in different parts of the world.
Kaspersky highlighted three kinds of fake offers:
- The countdown discount: An English-language site advertised a 25% discount and copied Apple’s visual style. A timer claiming only 30 minutes were left pushed visitors toward a quick decision. At checkout it asked for contact details and a shipping address but not card information, saying a manager would call later to confirm delivery and payment. Kaspersky says this kind of setup often opens a fraud scheme that ends in financial loss.
- The multilingual pre-order page: Another fake site let users pick their language, showed off the phone’s features, and invited pre-orders in a currency of the visitor’s choice. It suggested the buyer would be redirected to Apple’s official site, which isn’t true.
- The Portuguese WhatsApp lure: Scammers aimed at Portuguese-speaking users tried to move the conversation to a messaging app straight away. They asked for the phone number linked to the victim’s WhatsApp account and an email address, supposedly to check availability. That exposes contact details and leaves the victim open to more social engineering.
Stay safe with these tips
As usual, don’t buy from sketchy websites, and one way to be diligent about them is to double-check URL formats and the spelling of organisation names before entering personal data.
Aside from utilizing security software that screens incoming traffic and blocks fraudulent links, one should also use dedicated virtual cards or a dedicated payment service, and keep credentials in a password manager.
Lastly, turn on 2-factor authentication authentication for IDs and financial apps, and remember to review bank statements regularly.
