One of the highly anticipated games on 2013 has landed on shores and I’ve given it a try.The entire game franchise has been a laughing stock for years and movies were very much disliked, probably due to its soulless character and the typical Hollywood mistakes which they still persistently make over the decades. How does this new Tomb Raider prequel fare against its predecessors though?

The game stats off in a very Far Cry 3-ish plot, get stranded on an island even eventually the plot thickens and everything has gone insane.

Archeologist Lara Croft sets off to find the lost island of Yamatai, who has a hunch that it’s in the Dragon’s Triangle – a Bermuda Triangle equivalent. This timeline however, Lara Croft has yet to learn tomb raiding like she does in every other game and as unfortunately as it may be, her first time though she’s unprepared.

The game itself starts in a very thrilling way, as your ship wrecks, make your way to escape the wreck and the tutorials will make you sweat with the intense environment.

The graphics of this game is very realistic, as if you’re really in the game itself. The graphics alone is enough to murder your eyes by giving it sweet, sweet diabetes with its eye-candilicious TresFX hair.

The gameplay pretty much resembles how the Uncharted trilogy is, lots of cutscenes and never ending variations of actions, You can play stealth or Rambo, both doesn’t matter but the way you kill your enemies do. Get a headshot and you’ll get more XP to upgrade your skills.

Salvage is an in-game currency that you’ll get from nearly everywhere – dead enemies, and illogically, animals. Gather enough salvage and you can upgrade your weapons!

What are Tomb Raider games without tombs? Side quests – or discoveries in this case – leads you to weapon parts, where you gather enough of them to unlock more upgrades for your weapons.

Imitating Uncharted, there is something which I dub it as cutscene misfortunes – which are things that happen during cutscenes take a permanent damage, but not during the gameplay. For example, you can endure a few arrow shot to your face while you’re in a gunfight, but during the cutscenes an arrow to the knee can cripple your leg.

Multiple challenges are spread out across the entire island, as the game is a little open world-ish but also a little dungeon-ish as it resembles Far Cry 3 and the Uncharted trilogy together. See something funny? Approach it first. Most probably it’s a challenge. You can also find logbooks hidden around corners that contains information of what the previous inhabitants or visitors wrote or treasure chests that contains ancient artifacts or dated items.

Over the past few years I played many new high end modern games and mostly disappoints –  it has absolutely no chemistry with the player and it’s a big turn off to see games being so typically American, where you just take a gun, go out and shoot anything that moves with 100% guarantee that you can kill it with man-made bullets alone. Such games had no immersion and also no emotional attachment to the players at all, making the game feels more like a chore than an enjoyable experience.

To make some progress in the story of the game, I tend to sweat involuntarily – primarily because of the intense action and the horrifying scenes that I have to see in the game with such high quality graphics. Solving puzzles in the game are a plus and it is applicable to the tombs found but somewhat also to how you strategize to defeat your enemies.

Verdict?

Rating : 9/10

This game is definitely sets a series of traumatic, thrilling and action-packed events for Lara Croft lovers worldwide. The game is overall glitchy (far less glitchy than its predecessors) and controls are irresponsive at some point of the game, making it a constant turn-off for irrational death. I will most definitely recommend this game for all gamers, especially Uncharted fans. You can never get tired of what Nathan Drake does in the entire trilogy even though you know what he’s going to do.

The immersive experience catches you in the emotional part as it even sets the traumatic experience to you when Lara Croft goes through tombs of only the sickest, maddest person will “create”. You really have to play the game to experience it first hand.

“After all, you’re a Croft.”
