I’ve tried and tested a bunch of Beyerdynamic headphones and earphones – ranging from the budget-friendly to higher-end-high-performance ones. The DT 231 Pro was struck somewhere in between mid-range and budget-friendly, but has a few perks.

I don’t want to spoil anything, so let’s get into the review!

The packaging itself is rather plain, with some pictures and highlight points.

Digging up all the contents, there is the headphone itself, a 3.5mm to 6.25mm audio jack converter, and a warranty guide. There isn’t much going on, except for the fact that there’s a ghostly smiley face cardboard cutout inside.

There’s nothing much to talk about the features about this headphone, as it is a very basic piece of audio product. So why not jump directly into the tests?

To describe it shortly, it’ll be very comfortable. However, that’s an understatement. The design of having a band that applies pressure and to rest on the head is actually very comfortable. It felt light – just a pad on the head and clamps on the ears. Even after long hours of using it continuously and with vigorous movements, the headphone does not move much or fall off, thanks to the excellent grip.

However the size of those two earcups however are a little problematic. I have relatively large ears, and that’s a problem for me personally. However, the foam is soft enough to not leave a mark or just press it down with excessive force. also, the earcups have a slight rotation to adapt to natural human skull shape.

Overall, I’d say the comfort is pretty okay, they have all the necessities to make a comfortable small-sized headphone.

[nextpage title=”Performance”]Quick specs rundown here. the DT 231 Pro can output 20 to 18,000 Hz, and has a 32Ω nominal impedance, and 2.5 meter straight cable.

First of all, the performance of the DT 231 Pro is very good. I’ve got a good feeling when I first wore this pair of headphones – it’s comfortable, and powerful. Doing my usual testing where I test it over a few devices, it’s easy to say that its frequency response is quite flat. Listening to the epic Battle Medley 2012 [Final Fantasy I~XIV] and also In The Mood by the BBC Big Band, the soundstage is pretty decent, but little cramped up compared to other headphones. I would say it’s quite decent as soundstage is obviously present, but just now as good as I’d hope it would be.

Moving on, I tested with my all time favourite – Adventure Time by Rogue. No soundstage, just plain frequency response testing. Instantly within the first 30 seconds of the song, the frequency response is known. Mids are great, bass is okay-ish punchy enough to leave a good taste to the ears, highs are clear and crisp. Very satisfied on how this song turned out.

The lows can be borderline enjoyable on a heavy bass music like Supermassive Black Hole by Muse. Those guitar rifts are strong enough to punch the ears, vocals are clear enough, and the DT 231 Pro can definitely handle mids nicely.

So here’s the conclusion after more songs tested. Definitely has soundstage but only performs okay, mids and highs are decent, but the punching basses feels a little lacking. All in all for performance, it’s a the DT 231 Pro is a pair of clarity headphone.

Also, noise isolation is just horrible on the DT 231 Pro. No need to test on that – it’s just bad.

Beyerdynamic DT 231 Pro is a decent pair of headphones – it has excellent response in highs and mids, but so-so with lows. The additional perks is that the DT 231 Pro is exceptionally lightweight, and grips very well on the head. Noise isolation however is disappointing. Comfort is okay, but has room for improvement – literally more room for the earcups, that’ll be great.

Till this point, the DT 231 Pro might not sound convincing, but the price of RM250 surely is. It’s nicely priced for a pair of clarity headphones.

Jaben at SS15 or Nu Sentral will be having the Beyerdynamic DT 231 Pro for testing! Also available for purchase online here!
