Many scientist believe that there were liquid on Mars at a certain time on the surface of Mars. The evidence shown by the planet are those trails and channels that they believe to be carved by liquid water. We all know that if there is water, there is life. So far, data from the rovers and probes suggest that the water on the surface are acidic and salty; not suitable for life.

Recently, NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) has announced that the recent drills by Curiosity discovers that a stream bed is actually capable of sustaining life.

“They indicate a habitable environment characterized by neutral pH, chemical gradients that would have created energy for microbes, and a distinctly low salinity, which would have helped metabolism if microorganisms had ever been present. “A fundamental question for this mission is whether Mars could have supported a habitable environment,” said Michael Meyer, lead scientist for NASA’s Mars Exploration Program at the agency’s headquarters in Washington. “From what we know now, the answer is yes.” ”

However, Curiosity is only equipped with a chemistry lab, not a biology lab. It means that an analysis of the capability to sustain life never mean that there are or was any life form on Mars.

Future missions could be sending another rover capable of analyzing the martian history to conclude whether there was any life form on Mars. Finding out that Mars could sustain life is of course, exciting!
