We all know AMD Zen will be arriving this year. What we don’t know is the performance. AMD however decided to go public straight away and show the world what it is that the brand new Zen architecture has to offer.
AMD Zen shows off just 3 main things to the world – they’re aiming for performance, throughput, and efficiency. I’m impressed by how AMD puts it too. They also showed us that there’s a huge efficiency improvement with a 40% increase in its instructions per clock (IPC)!
The first ever Zen-based processor is Summit Ridge, which has 8 core with 16 threads, runs on DDR4 RAM, and runs on PCIe Gen 3. Clearly, it’s aimed towards high-end PC market for now. Of course, Zen architecture will come to the mobile market as well.
Here’s a few key takeaway points AMD Zen has presented:
- Two threads per core
- 3 levels of cache with superior speeds
- 14nm FinFET process
- faster FPU loading
Check out this video right here, where AMD Zen was shown off compared to an Intel Broadwell-E processor.
AMD even uploaded their entire slides to SlideShare. Have a look at the entire presentation here. Based on what I can see from the slides though, the entire AMD Zen architecture shows really promising numbers as of now.
