Antutu benchmark is one of the benchmark tools that we use for all of our smartphone tests for quite a long time. However, the app is removed from the Google Play Store overnight, without any warnings.
Antutu is one of the more well-known smartphone benchmark tools and acts as a means of gauging the performance of a particular smartphone. We won’t get into the details of how utterly flawed Antutu benchmarks are because that’s a story for another day – but people are obsessed over the numbers that a smartphone can produce.
However, according to Android Police, the Antutu benchmark is likely owned by Cheetah Mobile. It’s quite an indirect link though, as Android Police states that the privacy policy in Antutu’s page in the Google Play Store points to Cheetah Mobile’s website. Google has decided to remove all of Antutu’s apps from the Play Store. We’re talking about:
- Antutu Benchmark
- Antutu 3DBench
- AItutu
It is also pointed out that Fu Sheng is the chairman/manager of Beijing Antutu Technology Co. and is also the CEO of Cheetah Mobile. There’s quite a lot of traces leading Antutu back to Cheetah Mobile, even though the information is fragmented.
So far, Antutu seems to know that this is happening. They’ve hosted the APK files on their website and you can download it directly from their website.
We’re thinking that this is a part of Google Play Store’s crackdown on disruptive ads in apps that are available on the Play Store. Google has just recently announced that they’ve removed nearly 600 apps from the Play Store, and Cheetah Mobile could be one of those developers that are heavily-hit.
Cheetah Mobile is infamous for buying up successful apps and turn them into a data-harvesting platform with lots of in-app purchases. It’s no surprise that Google just gives the banhammer to Cheetah Mobile – and I’m truly glad that they did.
