While Apple’s biggest news might be the recent release of MacBook Neo, here’s another big shell dropping – In less than 6 months, Tim Cook will not be the CEO of this trillion-dollar company.
Effective September 1, he will be moving on to the Executive Chairman of the board, with John Ternus, who’s the SVP of Hardware Engineering, filling his shoes. Apparently, this is an unanimous board decision after years of succession planning, but the shift will not be as catastrophic as one might think, since there’s still enough time for Cook to guide Ternus throughout the summer, as well as continuing to be involved at the higher levels, such as dealing with global policymakers.
There’s also a board-level reshuffle happening alongside this, where Arthur Levinson is moving from non-executive chairman to lead independent director, while Ternus joins the board at the same time, so structurally, Apple is aligning everything around this transition date.
Despite there being many case studies of corporations appointing leaders who are not familiar with the operations and roots, Ternus ain’t one – he’s the one hugely involved with real hardware, so there’s no question that Apple products will run the best house-designed chips for years to come.
That identity is expected to continue as Ternus catches the baton from Cook, who has been focusing on growing Apple in a consistent albeit “boring” way instead of Steve Jobs’ way of “bombshell iPhone design in each generation” and his insatiable chase for perfection.
So yeah, the Apple of today will continue to be the Apple you know in the foreseeable future – more powerful and efficient computing with each new product, and the occasional “spook” such as the backside redesign introduced by the iPhone 17 Pro lineup.
