Apple made significant progress toward its goal of becoming carbon neutral by 2030. In their 2024 Environmental Progress Report, the company announced over 55% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions since 2015.
This achievement is fueled by several initiatives. Apple is transitioning its supply chain to clean energy sources and incorporating recycled materials into its products. For instance, the MacBook Air M3 is the first Apple product made with more than half recycled materials, and the company has significantly increased the use of recycled cobalt and lithium in batteries.
Collaboration is another key factor. Apple’s Supplier Clean Energy Program supports renewable energy projects around the world, and by working with suppliers on energy efficiency, they’ve helped avoid over 1.7 million metric tons of carbon emissions.
Apple is also tackling packaging waste. They’re replacing plastic with fiber-based alternatives and exploring even more sustainable solutions through research partnerships.
Understanding that climate change disproportionately impacts certain communities, Apple is partnering with organizations worldwide to address these issues. Their efforts include supporting environmental education, sustainable agriculture practices, and water access programs.
Innovation in recycling is another area of focus. Apple has developed robots like Daisy, Dave, and Taz to disassemble and process used electronics, and they’re continually investing in research to improve recycling efficiency.
Apple’s commitment to sustainability extends to its buildings. Over 100 Apple facilities are certified for sustainable design, minimizing energy and water use, as well as waste.
The Restore Fund invests in high-quality carbon removal projects like regenerative agriculture and ecosystem restoration, further reducing Apple’s environmental footprint.
Finally, Apple is engaging customers in its environmental efforts. Their trade-in and recycling programs recovered a record 12.8 million devices last year, and they offer educational resources to help customers make informed choices. Those devices that are traded in are also recycled via Apple’s own recycling methodologies.
Apple is also celebrating Earth Day and they’re releasing a special award for those who complete any workout of 30 minutes or more on 22nd April while wearing an Apple Watch.
