It’s been about a year and a half since the original Apple M1 chip was announced. Out of nowhere, Apple just announced the Apple M2 chip and the first two laptops to use the Apple M2 chip is the Apple MacBook Air, and also the MacBook Pro 13.
But, let’s talk about the M2 first.
Apple M2 chip
I mean, this is highly anticipated. Everyone has their eyes on Apple’s M-series chip as it shows the true potential of what an SoC with proper hardware and software integration can do.
The new M2 chip is fabricated using the second-generation 5nm process, and it has 20% more transistors when compared to M1, and it is also able to achieve more than 50% more memory bandwidth.
Of course, since this is a new generation of the M-series chip, Apple claims a massive improvement in terms of performance while improving the media engine too.
Apple also did a quick jab on Intel with these few slides.
New MacBook Air 2022
Look, the MacBook Air 2020 that was announced alongside the M1 was (and still is) one of my favorite laptops. It’s thin, light, has great performance, and also comes with an amazing battery life. So, what’s new with the MacBook Air 2022?
Well, other than just being equipped with the new Apple M2 chip, we now also have a brand new design. Gone is the wedge-shape that we’ve been accustomed with since the inception of the first MacBook Air, and what we have now seems to be very similar to the MacBook Pro.
Apple does claim that this new design is more efficient in terms of its space utilization, so I’m okay with it.
Apple also upgraded the screen of the MacBook Air 2022, and the laptop is now also available in a total of 4 different colors!
That Midnight color looks really elegant though.
By the way, the new MacBook Air 2022 also has MagSafe. Best of all, Apple has corresponding colors MagSafe cable colors too. Got the Midnight-colored MacBook Air? The MagSafe cable is in Midnight color too. Beautiful.
Also, it seems like the included charger with the MacBook Air 2022 comes with double USB-C ports. Finally! I can charge my laptop and my phone with just one charging brick! This is the reason why I use the Ugreen 100W GaN charger – to declutter my table!
Updated MacBook Pro 13
I didn’t expect this though. The MacBook Pro 13 got an update as well, and it now also comes with M2. Honestly though, I’m much more interested in the MacBook Air 2022.
Prices
The new M2 MacBook Air 2022 starts at USD $1,199. But, the M1 MacBook Air 2020 is still available for sale at just USD $999. It’s still a solid laptop to buy today, and with that price cut – I’m sure it’ll still sell like hot cakes.
The new M2 MacBook Air and MacBook Pro are coming next month. Hopefully, I can get my hands on the MacBook Air 2022 in Midnight color. I’m really excited about that laptop.
