The rumored VR headset is finally a reality – mixed reality, I might add. The Apple Vision Pro is something that you can buy soon, and it is releasing in 2024.
There aren’t many details regarding this headset, actually. From what I know, no one actually got to wear it to test it out in the demo area. It was only placed there for people to take selfies with – and that’s about it.
As for what Apple said, it comes with visionOS – the world’s first operating system made for spatial navigation (that sounded weird) and it has an ultra-high-resolution display that has 23 million pixels across two displays, and packs with a dual-chip design – Apple’s M2, and a new R1 chip.
Apple also emphasized that the entire headset is see-through and doesn’t have an external controller so you will have to rely on Apple’s cameras to do proper hand tracking. Will it work well? No idea. I’ve tested hand tracking on other VR headsets and it never worked out well. Maybe we need some Apple magic to make it work properly.
The reason why the Apple Vision Pro headset is so thin is that it has a cable that is permanently tethered to the headset. That is the battery of the Vision Pro. While this design can indeed make the headset thinner and lighter and potentially not as hot, having a cable dangling there is a problem.
The headband is a “3D knitted” design that just seems like a band that goes around your head while providing some cushion, and the facial interface is something that will stretch around and fit your face’s curvature.
So far, there aren’t any hands-on (or in this case, heads-on) demonstrations of the Apple Vision Pro just yet – it just seems like this headset is made for developers as of now. Especially for that price of USD $3,499, the average consumer can’t afford that.
Either way, I am interested to see how well this headset will work when it eventually comes out in 2024.
