As the development of 5G matures over the literal weeks and is starting to start testing in many parts of the world – including Malaysia, there is a race to see whoever’s 5G modem will arrive to the market first. Apple and Qualcomm settled their dispute and suddenly, Intel announces that they are quitting the 5G phone modem industry entirely. According to Verge, All of a sudden, Apple agrees to settle the dispute by paying Qualcomm an undisclosed amount and then signing a 6-year global patent license agreement deal.
On top of that, Apple also agreed to use Qualcomm’s parts for “multiple years” and hence, we mightsee Qualcomm Snapdragon X50 modem in iPhones next year. It is a little too late for this year as we expect the next-generation iPhone is already in production.
This dispute settlement triggered Intel to announce their cancellation and exit from the 5G phone modem industry entirely. Intel’s CEO Bob Swan said this in a statement:
We are very excited about the opportunity in 5G and the ‘cloudification’ of the network, but in the smartphone modem business it has become apparent that there is no clear path to profitability and positive returns. 5G continues to be a strategic priority across Intel, and our team has developed a valuable portfolio of wireless products and intellectual property. We are assessing our options to realize the value we have created, including the opportunities in a wide variety of data-centric platforms and devices in a 5G world.
According to the report from Nikkei Asia, Apple’s decision to settle the dispute with Qualcomm is due to Intel not meeting its 5G schedule. It was said that Intel admitted that they had a “late start” in 5G.
Apple also expressed that even by settling this dispute, the upcoming iPhone will not have 5G because it is already too late.
Perhaps we’ll see iPhone with 5G connectivity next year as it just seems to be too late for them to make it for this year’s launch. It will be even better to launch next year since the 5G infrastructure is more matured and coverage is expanded.
