Once again, I am surprised by how Apple is pushing its technologies forward. Here are just a few of the points that interest me.
Firstly, the iPhone 15 Pro uses titanium and that means it is going to be tougher than ever. However, Apple said that they made the phone more easily repairable. The backplate will now be more accessible – reducing the hassle of device maintenance.
Of course, Apple still commits to their sustainability promise by using recycled cobalt for the battery and recycled aluminium for the iPhone 15’s constructions on certain parts too.
The switch at the side of the phone has now been replaced by the new Action Button. This customizable button opens up a world of possibilities, allowing you to configure it to perform a wide range of actions, making your iPhone experience more tailored to your needs.
Of course – a new iPhone means a new chipset. This new iPhone 15 Pro is using the new A17 Pro chipset, built on a 3nm process using EUV process (extreme ultraviolet lithography). This powerful chipset not only delivers blazing-fast performance but also introduces hardware-accelerated ray-tracing for stunning lighting effects and a MetalFX upscaler for enhanced fidelity in graphics.
And Apple isn’t messing around by just saying that this is a “good chip”. Apple managed to get a few games to run on the iPhone 15 Pro – namely titles like Resident Evil: Village, Resident Evil 4 Remake, and even the upcoming Assassin’s Creed: Mirage. I’m impressed!
Of course, the iPhone 15 Pro comes with USB-C too – but the A17 Pro chipset has a special controller for this port to bring forth a few more features. It is using USB-C 3.2 Gen 2 – and that means we can get 10Gbit/s data transfer rate. However, we’re not sure if we can connect this phone to an external display since there is no mention regarding DisplayPort Alt Mode for the USB-C port.
The cameras also got an upgrade. They now have shortcuts to a few different focal lengths and new stabilization technology that combines various technologies for the perfect shot.
Thanks to the USB-C port, we can even record ProRes videos in 4K60, and the best part is that it can be directly offloaded to a Mac or external storage drive. I’m glad that this feature exists as I can save footages directly to my external SSD and edit off that same drive later. I can essentially skip the step of transferring footages back and forth.
One software tweak Apple made to the cameras is to enable the filming of Spatial Videos for the Apple Vision Pro. This technology promises to take virtual reality to the next level, offering an unprecedented level of immersion.
