ASUS ROG Zephyrus S GX502 Glacier Blue

When it comes to smartphones these days, we’re always looking for the most affordable option. Looking at the current slew of smartphones we have in the market now, the one device that stood out from the crowd is the Xiaomi Mi 9T. It caught my eye when I saw the price of just RM1,199 – and we instantly deemed it as the smartphone to get since its price for that hardware is just too good of an offer to pass up.

With such a low price tag, what do you really get exactly? Let’s find out.

My attention was first caught by its price tag. The second thing was the beautiful back of the Mi 9T. Of course, the one we’re featuring here is in the classic Carbon Black colour. The Mi 9T is also available in both Arctic Blue and red colour variants, with shimmering edges that reflect light in a magnificent pattern.

We have the Carbon Black and Arctic Blue color variants here.

For those who are getting the classic black colour, it has a carbon fiber texture underneath that curved back glass. Makes it even classier and nicer to hold.

The third thing that caught my attention was its specifications. Even though Xiaomi is charging only RM1,199, you get these core specs:

  • Qualcomm Snapdragon 730 chipset
  • 6GB RAM
  • 64GB internal storage
  • 4,000mAh battery with Qualcomm Quick Charge 3.0
  • MIUI 10 with Android 9.0 Pie

With such beefy specs, you can get an experience that is near to the highest-end smartphone on the market right now. We tried a number of our favorite games on the Mi 9T too.

Firstly, we have the obvious – Honkai Impact 3. We tested with HD graphical assets with the highest graphical settings enabled. The Xiaomi Mi 9T managed to handle the entire game pretty well.

Then comes our second game of choice – Asphalt 9. Once again, we selected the highest graphical settings and without surprise – the game ran smoothly. I played a few races and forgot that I was actually testing the Mi 9T, because the gaming experience on the Mi 9T is too immersive.

And immersive is the right word. Because the Mi 9T lacks a notch or a cutout, the entire display feels massive. With its 6.39-inch AMOLED screen, the Mi 9T can be really bright and is perfectly usable under direct sunlight as well. We also checked that the Mi 9T can stream Netflix shows in HD as well.

There is a popup compartment that houses the selfie camera. It only appears when needed and personally, this is great since we don’t take selfies 24/7. Having the maximum possible available screen real estate is much more important here – especially for the best, unobstructed gaming experience.

Obviously, you can play PUBG Mobile on the Mi 9T and expect smooth frame rates as well – though you’ll have to use GFX Tools for now since PUBG Mobile is not updated to fully support the Snapdragon 730 just yet. If you use GFX tools, then the game is able to run at HDR graphical settings with 60fps, and both anti-aliasing and shadows enabled.

Then obviously, comes the display. This beautiful 6.39-inch AMOLED display without any notches or cutouts make the Mi 9T one of the most immersive experiences for both gaming and video. Its unobstructed AMOLED display with a 19.5:9 aspect ratio means that you can watch movies with magnificent contrast, exquisitely deep blacks, and brilliant details without having to worry about certain parts of the scene getting chopped off by a notch.

By the way, you can also watch Netflix and YouTube in HDR since the AMOLED panel supports it. If your videos support HDR, you get beautiful colors and contrast that will most certainly blow your mind.

6GB of RAM here also means that you can swap between a multitude of apps smoothly and seamlessly. Be it in games or Chrome browser with lots of tabs, that 6GB worth of RAM is sufficient for day-to-day usage.

Then comes a few more quality of life necessities that Xiaomi retained in the Mi 9T. It comes with an audio jack – and we have an in-depth investigation on just how important having an audio jack really is. And trust me, if you want a proper movie and gaming experience on your phone, you need that 3.5mm audio jack.

Best of all, the Mi 9T is also certified for Hi-Fi sound. With it packs HiRes Audio support as well – making your audio experience even more true to life than before.

Of course, supporting the Qualcomm Quick Charge 3.0 is a bonus here as well. Having a relatively massive 4,000mAh can last you throughout the day and yet if you ever need extra power, just hook it up the charger to last through the night.

Remember – all of these is wrapped up nicely in a smartphone that is priced at only RM1,199 for its 6GB RAM + 64GB storage, which is available on Lazada here. For the 6GB RAM + 128GB storage version, you can get it at your nearest Mi Stores nationwide for the price of RM1,399.
