The recent moves of the dear flagship smartphone killer of old times OnePlus none but ‘Never Settle’ as announcements of them releasing their own monitors and mechanical keyboards came through in a bit of a surprise to everyone.
First on the list is the first exclusive launch of the OnePlus monitors in India and they are named as the X27 and E24 with the X-series placed in the premium tier while the E-series is positioned for affordability and balance.
When a launch event combines the different spectrums of both cheap and expensive products, of course the hype train will be sounded as in the case of the X27 which is reportedly to come with up to 165Hz refresh rate and AMD FreeSync Premium. Additionally, it seems like it is pivotable? If it is, then it is definitely a choice for gamers who need to play in portrait mode.
Ports wise, only these ports are excavated from their teaser image which consists of 1x HDMI, USB Type-C, VGA, headphone jack, and DC power ports. Suffice to say, the monitor stand is kinda Apple-esque as well.
These monitors will be revealed on December 12 and presumably made exclusive available for India in the early stage.
Moving onto the topic of mechanical keyboards, the news was reported by Android Authority where the OnePlus Featured – a platform created to address the needs of its community via feedbacks and market research, will be revealing more information on December 15 on the partnership with Keychron.
If you’re not familiar with Keychron, they are one of the brands that popped off in recent years due to their aggresive pricing, extensive modding capabilities, and well-built products that made them one of the most popular brands when it comes to mechanical keyboards that are not from a company that makes “gaming peripherals”.
As for why they are jumping into the mechanical keyboard scene, the brand says that it is due to major voting among its users in terms of what product should OnePlus explore next which in this case – the click/clack/thock.
Since they are relying on Keychron production and technology as a base, the end product should look fairly polished and fitted with some OnePlus quirks and I sincerely wish that they don’t screw this up. The very least they can do is to provide lots of swappable parts to let users pick the one they like – one of the core idea and root of fun in custom mechanical keyboard.
Self Thoughts
Although their smartphone business is still doing “okay” and I phrase it with a hint of questionable vibe due to all the “green line” issues happening across the globe, instead of saying we are super surprised but at least we didn’t expect them to do this.
For the former reason, Xiaomi has been selling their own monitors for years but they started off as a smartphone company (and proceed to become one of the largest AIoT brands across Asia) so OnePlus joining that trend is kinda reasonable if they “don’t want to settle” and become too comfortable with just earning bucks through selling small devices.
The question now lies upon whether they can revive that slogan of theirs by really pushing the market into producing high-quality monitors with the bare minimum while keeping all the good features and user-friendly characteristics.
On the other hand, the Keychron partnership is more likely to be a one-off thing for fans of both brands to acquire something that is special and produced in limited quantities. If you’re not familiar with the custom mechanical keyboard hobby, the purchasing power of keyboard nerds in the circle is extraordinarily high and I’m talking about in the range of USD800 to USD1000 being the usual “end game premium” or “one and only serial-numbered board” kind of thing.
