As someone who geeks out over data, I find the latest findings published by Opensignal showed the overall mobile network experience across 40 countries. In this finding, Opensignal pulled data and compared it between the three biggest smartphones brands globally – Samsung, Apple, and Huawei.
All the mobile network experiences were pulled in and compared as a brand in whole, so it includes all smartphones from its lower-end to highest-end flagship devices.
Particularly for us Malaysians, between the 3 biggest smartphone brands, Samsung still reigns supreme as it scores an average of 1.3Mb/s faster than Huawei users, and a staggering 3.3Mb/s faster than iPhone users. Ouch.
One of the other highlights here is those high-end smartphones in Malaysia averages the download speed of 19.9Mb/s, which is 1.6 times faster than low-tier smartphone users. We know that this is indeed a trend but the quantified amount is staggering.
Out of 40 countries in this data set, Samsung is faster than both Apple and Huawei users in 35% of the countries. Second comes Apple, which is faster in 17.5% of the countries, and the remaining 47.5% sees two or more of the brands tied. Surprisingly, none of the countries saw Huawei users experience the fastest download speeds since they are a telecommunication company in essence.
Opensignal also categorized each smartphone brand’s users into three groups – high, mid, and low tier. Samsung is crowned champion in the download speeds in the high-tier category, while Apple scores the mid-tier. Huawei is the best performer for the low-tier category.
Also, Malaysia’s mobile internet speed is just terrible. Across 73 countries with high-tier “gigabit capable” smartphones with LTE Category 16 or above, Malaysia is ranked at 55th out of 73 countries. Singapore is ranked 3rd while Thailand is ranked 41st.
On another side note, high-tiered smartphones have lower latency, hence making them better gaming machines (unsurprisingly) while using mobile network. Though it is not by a whole lot – but the delay is still quantifiable and shows a difference.
What information we can gather from here is rather simple – by looking at every brands’ tiered speeds, there isn’t much difference. However, when these mobile networks are compared against each other, the story changes to show who has the better engineering prowess in mobile connectivity.
Of course, Opensignal is an independent data company that captures all the data and then gathers it all together and plot graphs from there. Once the graphs are acquired, patterns were sought after and hence, arriving at what we have now.
