Do you want a big, thin, yet lightweight laptop with a beautiful screen and great battery life while equipped with actually good performance? Then this Acer Swift Edge 16 might be for you. I have listed a total of 6 things – so let’s dive through all of them in detail in that order.
We’ll start with the size – this laptop is big. As the name suggests, it is a 16-inch screen laptop. Now, this size might be polarizing for a lot of people as some prefer a compact laptop, and some just want a bigger laptop screen. So, that’s up to your personal preference.
The screen in itself, is a magnificent one. This laptop comes with an OLED screen with a super high 3200×2000 pixel resolution screen with up to 120Hz refresh rate. When I say this is a beautiful screen, it’s not a joke. Our colorimeter reports that it covers 100% of sRGB, 99.89% of DCI-P3, and 98% of Adobe RGB color gamuts. Damn, that’s good.
The average ΔE is also very low too.
Some might argue that the bezel size around the screen isn’t the best since the top chin – I should call it the forehead – is kinda big – but it has a 1440p webcam.
With such a magnificently big and beautiful screen, the laptop’s spec is rather interesting. It comes with the:
- AMD Ryzen 7 7840U
- AMD Radeon 780M graphics that is based on the RDNA 3 architecture
- 16GB DDR5 RAM at 6400MT/s
- 512GB SSD
If you have been following AMD’s chipsets for the past few months, then you might have realized that the AMD Ryzen Z1 Extreme is very similarly-specced to the Ryzen 7 7840U found in this Acer Swift Edge 16. However, the Ryzen 7 7840U only runs at 15W.
The performance is still pretty good, honestly. We won’t get 60fps even at the lowest graphical settings at 0.6x render resolution – but that’s okay since we’re playing it in the native resolution. If we lower the game’s resolution to 1080p, we can get much better and more consistent framerates.
The keyboard on this laptop is pretty good as it is springy and has adequate travel distance – but the layout is not something I like. It’s a personal preference of mine since I don’t use the number pad.
The trackpad good since it has a decent size and has good palm rejection. I always use this laptop with an external mouse anyway, so there is nothing much to talk about here.
Ports – ah, I was pleasantly surprised with the ports. Acer’s website doesn’t list out what ports are available and it just says “yes”, but if I check it in Device Manager, I found out that it does have a USB 4 root router. Not sure which USB-C port is actually USB 4, and I have no proper way to test it.
It also says on this sticker here that this laptop comes with a HDMI 2.1 port but I’m not sure if it’s the real HDMI 2.1 (FRL) or if it’s the fake rebranded HDMI 2.0 (HDMI 2.1 TMDS).
Still, I really do like the positioning of the ports on this laptop. And hey, this laptop comes with a USB-C charger too! I ended up not the included charger since our Ugreen GaN charger can charge this laptop without any issues and the performance is the same.
Speaking of the charger, this laptop comes with a 54Wh battery, and while it might not be the biggest – it can last for about 8 hours at 55% brightness while using it to type stuff, browse the web, and listen to music, but most of the things are mostly dark.
I was also using it at 60Hz refresh rate and this laptop doesn’t automatically change to 60Hz when unplugged from the charger – so you’ll have to do this manually to conserve and prolong the battery life.
Still, that goes to show how great the AMD chip really is. It has great performance and efficiency, hence is able to extend the battery life so much further even with such a high-resolution OLED screen.
And if you do want to upgrade this laptop, you can’t do anything, actually. Everything is soldered onto the motherboard except for the SSD and WiFi card – which is, sadly, very common for a thin Windows laptop like this Acer Swift Edge 16.
All of this hardware is packed within this very thin and light laptop. Acer claims that it is only 1.23kg light and 12.95mm thin.
While this laptop with this specific list of hardware configurations is not available for sale in most places, I think you’ll be just fine with the Ryzen 5 7535U model. Everything is the same except for the CPU and GPU – which I personally think is fine since this laptop is not meant for gaming anyway.
And if I were to guess, the word “edge” in the name Acer Swift Edge 16 means that this laptop is meant to be a thin edge client. As in a device that is used to remotely access another more powerful computer – maybe a server or some sort. But you can still play some games on this laptop too.
Yet with such a beautiful, massive screen – I can’t help but think that this laptop can be doubled as an excellent laptop for watching movies and whatnot. For the price of around RM4k depending on what specs you go for – and that’s why I think this laptop is magnificent.
