OPPO released another mid-range smartphone recently – the OPPO A74. This is a rather simple phone so let’s run through all our thoughts about this phone after using it for some time.
Since the OPPO A74 is a simple phone, so let’s go through all of the 6 points of a smartphone that matters to me.
Starting off with the design. The OPPO A74 comes in two colors – black and blue. We got the blue color variant with us and it has a gradient from blue to silver and it is also very shimmery.
It is also a fingerprint magnet and because of its shimmery back, those fingerprints can be seen easily.
As for the screen, the OPPO A74 comes with a 6.43-inch AMOLED screen with the typical 2400×1080 pixels in resolution and runs at 60Hz refresh rate at most.
The colors are good and the screen is vivid, no complaints about the screen but I have one complaint about the pre-installed screen protector. It’s… slightly misaligned.
It comes with a total of 3 cameras, but realistically, only the main camera can be used to take pics.
I can’t explore much about the cameras since it was already at the start of the lockdown here in Malaysia – but I think it looks decent enough. The night mode is not perfect but it helped a lot.

ColorOS – in general – is okay for me. It works well, everything is laid out properly, and I have no problems using it. My only problem with this variant of ColorOS in the OPPO A74 is the amount of pre-installed software. We have a lot.
And what I also don’t like is the “hot apps” and “hot games”. I don’t need any of them yet I can’t remove them. They’re tied to the other “app market” that OPPO has, and that app market also cannot be removed.
In terms of performance, the Snapdragon 662 is performing very well but there’s nothing spectacular. It performs well in day-to-day usage but not so much in certain more demanding games.
There’s also RAM disk feature available in the OPPO A74, even though I think it’s not necessary since this phone already comes with 6GB RAM. In the settings menu, you can expand the RAM disk capacity by 2GB, 3GB, or 5GB. For whatever reason, there’s no 4GB option available.
The battery in the OPPO A74 is a massive 5,000mAh battery. It lasts for more than 14 hours in our battery life test which means it can last you throughout a single day’s use with zero issues.
There is a 33W charger included, which charges the phone from 15% to 100% battery in slightly more than an hour.
Honestly speaking at the price of RM849, it’s a decent phone. ColorOS offers one of the better software experiences that I wouldn’t complain much about – other than the hot games and hot apps.
