Samsung announced the Galaxy SmartTag alongside the Galaxy S21 series of smartphones. This device isn’t given much attention – but I think it should. It’s more than just a tag to locate stuff – and it’s very well-made.
And in today’s review, it’s a little difficult to tell by words – but it’s much better to be described and shown via video. And I’ll be showing you how I have been using this little device throughout these days.
Overall, the Galaxy SmartTag is more than just to locate items that it is attached to. The Galaxy SmartTag also has a button – which turns out to bring an amazing feature to the table. Since the Galaxy SmartTag is paired with the SmartThings app, it can be used for automation.
For my use case, since my room is using Yeelights – which I have also connected to my SmartThings account – I can turn the lights on or off via the Galaxy SmartTag.
I mean, the SmartThings app is just very versatile, by the way. With the addition of the Galaxy SmartTag, the entire ecosystem is now even more versatile than ever.
But, I found out one unfortunate thing. Even though the Samsung SmartThings can be installed on non-Samsung phones, the Galaxy SmartTag only works with Samsung phones running on Android 8 or later. Quite a bummer, honestly.
For me personally, the Galaxy SmartTag is very useful. Since my room here is pretty much “smart”, the Galaxy SmartTag does add more “smartness” into my room while keeping track of the location of my stuff. So, I bought another SmartTag.
Yes, I have two now. I hooked one of them to my bag and hooked the other one on my external SSD that holds a lot of important data.
And speaking of hooks – Samsung, why didn’t you include a simple lanyard or carabiner or whatever sort of hook in the box? I mean, this thing is literally made to be hooked onto other things.
But either way, the Galaxy SmartTag is originally priced at RM119 – but it’s already discounted to RM99 now. I bought mine at RM55 during the 4.4 sale.
There’s also a Galaxy SmartTag 2-pack and it is priced at RM209 originally, but it’s at RM159 now. Still not as low of a price as me buying two single-pack SmartTags separately, though.
