A piece of good news for fellow Malaysians who rock the Samsung Galaxy Watch smartwatch as the blood pressure monitoring feature has been given the big fat ‘APPROVED’ stamp to be enabled in our country.

Samsung Galaxy Watch5 Pro

While the health monitoring features of smartwatches in recent years have improved drastically thanks to technological advancements in biosensors and smart algorithms that can figure out what’s happening in our bodies, the data collected by wearables and the associated companion apps are strictly for personal references and cannot be treated as an eligible alternative to actual medical equipment.

In order for a device or app to have these biosensors enabled within the software layer, it must first go through the approval process of related government bodies which in the case of Malaysia is the Ministry of Health under the category of Medical Device Authority Register. Once it has been verified and approved, the applicant is allowed to turn on the feature via a software update or something.

Samsung Blood Pressure App Certification

According to the submission report, it seems that Samsung Malaysia themselves filed the request some time already as the approval date starts from mid-November so presumably it has been in the works for some period.

Interestingly, the ‘Samsung Blood Pressure App’ is also the sole entry in the record without mentioning anything related to ECG since the blood pressure measuring function is hosted within the Samsung Health ecosystem but yeah there’s that.

Despite the record being officially approved by the MoH, Samsung Malaysia has yet to come up with an official announcement for it with official representatives we’ve contacted also holding back the information at the moment so the only choice we have is just to wait it out.

In the meantime, competing products also went ahead and procured their own official medical device recognition at different times with HUAWEI’s Watch D getting the green light for blood pressure and ECG while the Apple Watch strictly went for ECG.
