Samsung just unveiled the Galaxy SmartTag3, and it’s a meaningful step up from the previous generation in basically every direction, smaller, smarter, and for the first time, genuinely useful even if you’re not fully in the Samsung ecosystem.

Samsung's new Galaxy SmartTag3 can find your stuff from up to 60 meters away, and it works with iPhones too 1

Starting with the design, the SmartTag3 is about 35% smaller by volume and 33% lighter than its predecessor, making it a lot easier to clip onto keys, smaller bags, luggage, or even a pet collar without feeling bulky. It’s got a rounded shape finished with an aluminum button for a more refined feel, and Samsung’s offering official accessories like a Silicone Case with a keyring and a Loop Case for extra flexibility depending on how you want to attach it.

For the first time, it is also cross-OS compatible, and with SmartThings Find, both Galaxy and iOS users can now check and share a tag’s location and use Search Nearby. Battery life’s also pretty good – Up to 550 days under normal use, or up to 790 days in Power Saving Mode.

Powered by o Bluetooth 6.0 Channel Sounding, Compass View can now provide distance and directional guidance from up to 60 meters away, about three times farther than before, and as you get closer, ultra-wideband kicks in for more precise tracking, creating a smoother experience from long range all the way down to pinpoint accuracy. Beyond direct connection range, the Galaxy Find Network takes over, tapping into more than 900 million participating Galaxy devices worldwide that can help detect a lost SmartTag3 and update its location even when it’s far from your own phone.

Additionally, Place Notification lets you set a defined area and get an alert when a tagged item moves in or out of it, handy for knowing if your dog wanders out of the garden or your bike gets moved from where you parked it. Location History lets you review where a tag’s been over the past week, and Movement Detection Alert notifies you if your tag starts moving unexpectedly.

More so, this small device keeps its IP67 water and dust resistance rating, along with existing features like NFC-powered Lost Mode for displaying contact info when someone finds your lost item, SmartThings IoT Control for triggering smart home routines with the tag’s button, and Left Behind Alert for when your phone loses connection with a tagged item. Samsung’s also keeping location data encrypted throughout to protect user privacy.
