We have a brand new phone with us – and this is an actually appealing one. This new red color on the vivo V50 that was just released just looks absolutely stunning.
Design
The biggest highlight for this generation is definitely going to be this red color. This is a really stunning red color that does become a bit greyish at certain reflections. It’s not a very vivid type of red, but more velvet cake type of red. The camera bump also gets a red highlight and that makes the phone looks so bold.

Cameras
Speaking of the camera bump, let’s now talk about them. The cameras on the vivo V50 is actually the same as the vivo V40. Now, that’s not a bad thing since they’re both 50MP sensors but we do not have a telephoto camera here.

To have a look at all the pictures taken with the vivo V50, watch our video at the top of this review.
Screen
The screen on the vivo V50 though, is a pretty standard one. It’s using a 6.78-inch AMOLED screen with a resolution of 2393×1080 pixels and also goes up to 120Hz refresh rate.

The screen glass also curves into the phone frame, making it super beautiful and comfortable to hold.
The maximum auto brightness achievable on this phone is around 1280 nits – pretty good, and we can certainly use this phone outdoors without much of an issue.

As for the color accuracy, we gotta talk about all the 3 different color profiles that the vivo V50 has. Starting with the default color profile, we have a very good 98.86% sRGB and 95.59% DCI-P3 color gamut coverage. Even the ΔE number is very low too, so that’s great for the default settings.

When we change it to the Professional color profile though, the entire screen becomes desaturated since the DCI-P3 color gamut coverage is very low. Though, the ΔE number goes down even lower.

The last color profile is Bright – and this mode cranks all the color gamut coverage to 100% but the ΔE number is indeed a bit higher. Still, I do think the maximum ΔE number is and outlier since the average is very low.

I just don’t quite like the location of the fingerprint scanner since it’s just way too low.
Software
The software also remains the same as before as the vivo V50 is running on Funtouch OS 15. It’s a great skin though the amount of ads pushed via notifications fro the V-Appstore and vivo Store do get annoying. Just turn off the notifications from these apps and you’ll be fine.

We also get a lot of ads in the global search – but we can change it to become notifications instead.

Otherwise, I also like how vivo designed a wallpaper to match the red color of this new vivo V50. I mean, I really just like this color a lot.

Performance
Now, for the performance. The vivo V50 is once again using the Snapdragon 7 Gen 3. It’s been the same chipset as the vivo V30 that was released last year – and I do think that it starts to show its age.
You see, in our full gaming test video that you can watch at the top right corner – we tried Genshin Impact at the recommended low-to-medium graphical preset. It didn’t reach 60fps at this new region.
Then when we try again with the lowest graphical settings, it also didn’t reach 60fps at the new region of Natlan.
Zenless Zone Zero, at the lowest graphical settings, constantly below 30fps when we’re fighting the flower boss. For an action-intensive game like this, it will definitely be distracting.
Battery life
Now, how’s the battery life then? Well, this is where the vivo V50 got an upgrade. It’s now using an equivalent of 6,000mAh battery and paired with a relatively low-powered chipset like the Snapdragon 7 Gen 3, it can last for nearly 22.5 hours in our standardized battery life test! That’s seriously impressive – and I’m really amazed by it.

Charging speed
Now, for the charging speed. The vivo V50 now comes with a proprietary 90W charger in the box – and it can charge from 15% to completion in around 50 minutes or so.

Now, when we head into the settings menu and enable the fast charging option, it can trim the overall charging time by about 5 minutes or so, but it reaches the 50% charge mark in around 15 minutes only, which is much faster.

When we do plug the vivo V50 into our USB-PD PPS charger though, it has pretty much the exact same result as the proprietary charger with the fast charging option disabled, but has even better temperatures. That’s interesting, and that means we don’t need to use vivo’s charger to get fast charging. Perfect!

A few more things to mention
Okay, a few more things to mention about the vivo V50. It is using a USB 2.0 port at the bottom and does not have display output via that port, which is to be expected.

The vivo V50 does have dual-SIM card slots – at least for our region – but there is no microSD card slot.
Should you buy the vivo V50?
So, should you buy the vivo V50? Well, it’s a bit more nuanced here. I will say that if you’re using something like the vivo V20 or older, then yes – it’s a great upgrade. Still, I do wish for a bit more performance since the gaming performance isn’t the best – but hey, if you don’t play games on your phone, then it’s not a problem.

The battery life of the vivo V50 is astoundingly good, and we can even use a USB-PD PPS charger to get the same charging speed as the included 90W charger. That’s fantastic.
Let’s not forget that the cameras are also good. It doesn’t have a telephoto camera, but the images from the ultrawide and main cameras are great.
For the price of RM1,999 for the 12GB RAM + 256GB storage version, it’s basically the same price as the vivo V40. I think that if you are considered getting the vivo V40 but did not, then the vivo V50 will be a great choice.
