Who would’ve thought that the power of data still stands strongly? It goes to show how much data is archived in the world today, with the 10th million helium-filled HDD shipped off from WD’s factory since its debut of the HelioSeal platform 4 years ago.
With extremely high capacity hard disk at the same form factor, the WD HelioSeal hard disk is a product that is bound to be replacing traditional hard disks – especially in data centers. Yet that is what we’re looking at today. We’re generating more and more data by the minute, and we all need to store these data somewhere.
“Extreme capacity hard drives are increasingly a key value enabler for enterprise applications and Western Digital continues to be a technology and time-to-market leader in terms of delivering capacity-optimized enterprise HDDs,” said John Chen, vice president, TRENDFOCUS. “As cloud and traditional enterprise customers continue to develop applications that make use of all of their accessible data, high density drives will be a crucial component that enables cost-effective storage of that data at scale. Western Digital’s HelioSeal platform has proven to be a key differentiator that addresses high capacity needs.”
With over 10 million of these HelioSeal-approved hard disks sold, it equates to approximately 76 exabytes of data. An exabyte is a million terabytes, so you can get an idea of the scale of things. These HelioSeal hard disks actually save over 1 million kilowatt-hour each day – about half of the power required for 8TB air-filled drives. That amount of power can power up a small town!
Western Digital offers the HelioSeal platform on its enterprise-class products (under its HGST product brand as Ultrastar® He10 andUltrastar He8, and under its WD product brand as WD Gold), and its NAS and surveillance offerings (WD Red, WD Red Pro and WD Purple) in volume today.
