Apple caused a very disappointing commotion yesterday when they announced the two new iPhones. Yes, two. This is the first time ever that Apple announced two iPhones at the same time.
Basically, there’s one called the iPhone 5C and another called the iPhone 5S.
Skipping all the introduction, let’s get on with it.
iPhone 5C
Practically, this is the budget iPhone for everyone. Why? Because it is now officially a blown up version of the latest generation of iPod Touches with calling capabilities.
So, Apple’s strategy to make it cheaper (hence the C) is by stripping off all the metal on the iPhone 5 and replace them with coloured polycarbonate (essentially plastic), update the front-facing camera a little to a FaceTime HD camera and adds a larger battery.
Voila! The new iPhone 5C! You have 5 colours to choose from – green, blue, yellow, pink and white, which just lacks one main colour – black. How can they not have black??
The only difference between the colour options available for the iPhone 5C and the iPod Touch is only the black colour. Heh, Apple can save cost by making the same coloured polycarbonate and share it between the iPod Touch and the iPhone 5C too!
And oh – the cases look absolutely horrible. Have you ever seen such disgusting colours on a phone before? Not to mention the matrix of dusts after some time of usage without taking off the case to clean.
Seriously. Call the fashion police.
I think that the iPhone 5C is a very good marketing strategy, with its price though only $100 cheaper (approximately RM326) than the iPhone 5, it will affect the choice of many people while purchasing their device. Will it be my choice? Definitely no.
And oh – the iPhone 5 is discontinued because of a minor updated version yet much more “hip” looking.
iPhone 5S
This is where everyone says that the iPhone 5S is a total game changer. I’d like to say the same, but there are major flaws that can be pinpointed.
It comes with 3 colours, black, gold and white. Simple, yet classy.
Yes, it retains the metal from the iPhone 5, has a much better camera sensor and larger aperture. a new home screen button that is also a fingerprint reader, all ran by a new 64-bit A7 processor. It also has the aforementioned FaceTime HD front-facing camera too.
All that aside, there are major problems that goes on with the new iPhone 5S.
Firstly, the fingerprint reader will be a problematic one if it only saves the fingerprint of one finger. Imagine those who switch the phone usage between left and right hand. Many of us like to sometimes unlock with thumbs and sometimes switched to our forefinger. If the fingerprint reader can’t switch, then it’s totally useless.
Secondly is the A7 chip. First ever smartphone to have a 64-bit architecture processor. Let’s get to a little basic of computers and compare the main difference between 32 and 64 bit processors.
You have RAM. If you whip out your calculator or just type it into Google, you will find out that 2³² is equal to 4GB, which means it’s 4x1024x1024x1024 or 4×1024³ of bytes of RAM. The number of bits of your processor defines the total physical RAM that it can access. So the major difference here is when you bump up your processor to run 64 bits, it can access a total of 2⁶⁴ which is equals to 16x1024x1024x1024x1024x1024x1024 which also equals to 16×1024⁶, and it means 16 exabytes of RAM – and one exabyte a billion gigabytes!
I should also mention that every thousandth of a computer byte is 1024 because since computers are all in binaries, meaning it’s either 1’s or 0’s, the nearest multiple of 2 that is closest to a thousand is 1024, that is 2¹⁰.
From the simple math above, you can see one of the major difference between 32-bit and 64-bit processors – the number of addressable RAM. Since 32-bit is limited to a maximum usable RAM of 4GB, there is obviously a limitation that we are all going to face in the mobile world, and we actually faced this in our world of desktops and laptops.
To go beyond 4GB, we need a 64-bit processor. Here comes the twist – did Apple really went beyond 4GB RAM on the iPhone 5S? If no, then it is partially useless. 64-bit doesn’t mean extra RAM, alone, it also means some performance boost, as Apple said that the 64-bit processor doubled its CPU and GPU performance since the A6 chip.
The price? It’s $100 (RM326) higher than the iPhone 5. That sets a small gap of $200 (RM652) between the iPhone 5C and the iPhone 5S! Significant? Definitely.
What do we think
So what is our conclusion here? The iPhone 5S definitely have all the magic under the hood rather than the iPhone 5C, where everything happened on the outside instead. The iPhone 5C will definitely pose no threat to the mobile world as if the price of the 16GB version is converted straight from Singaporean Apple store, it costs SGD $848, and it’s approximately RM2180. The 16GB version iPhone 5S however will be out of almost everyone’s league, as it converts from a hefty SGD $988 to approximately RM2540.
Wow at the price.
Will it be a game changer however? Yes, but not to Apple. As far as we can foresee, the 64-bit processor will inevitably be implemented on the next generation Samsung Galaxy S or Note series, as they’re already running on 3GB of RAM.
Did I mention that the iPhone 5C’s case is ugly?
