HTC debuted its ‘Ultrapixel’ Camera at its past event which was held simultaneously at New York and London on the 19th February 2013.

It does perform well in low-lighted condition but many are skeptical about its performance in well-lighted conditions. HTC expects its users to upload the photos on social networking sites such as Facebook, Twitter, etc. and the resolution of 4 Mega Pixels is sufficient for a small print-out.

An interview by Computerworld with Symon Whitehorn (HTC’s Director of Special Projects, former Kodak Executive) shares on why did HTC went on with such a bold move.

On the question about the decision of using a 4MP sensor, Symon said the following:

It’s really [a matter of] becoming very rational about the megapixel count rather than using it as a marketing metric, which people have been doing before. Lots of megapixels have their place — usually in a bigger device. The price the industry is starting to pay by cramming more and more megapixels into a smaller and smaller sensor is loads of added noise and all-over performance.

I for one have to agree here, looking at the comparisons out in the internet has sort of ‘proven’ that even 13MP cameras does not necessary bring great imaging quality.

HTC’s move on increasing the size of the pixels has proven that in low-lighted conditions you’d still be able to capture usable photos and videos.

I myself never really printed photos I take with my Galaxy Nexus (has a 5MP camera) and only share them on Facebook. I bet most of us does the same. As optimistic consumers we would expect HTC to come up with a higher resolution camera in the near future. Personally, I think 8MP is the sweet spot.

  1. I like HTC products, but I feel this is a bad move for such a high end phone, it should at the very least have an 8 MP camera, I personally am not impressed with the 4 MP ultra pixels, I hope HTC brings back the 8 MP back into the league.
