Surely all of us heard USB 3.0 before. Most of the new laptops and PC are equipped with USB 3.0 port. Looking at the name itself, you can tell that USB 3.0 is the enhanced version of USB 2.0. Since it’s enhanced version, certainly we thought of faster speed, but do you really need it?
Well, USB 3.0 is definitely faster – but just how fast is it? Recently, SanDisk wrote an article teaching you how to choose your next USB 3.0. In the product list of SanDisk, 128GB SanDisk Extreme PRO USB 3.0 is the fastest USB stick. It can download a whole movie in about 8 seconds.
According to SanDisk, the transfer speed of the USB 3.0 is up to 60 times faster than the standard USB 2.0. It’s very fast, right? However, this is only valid if you have a USB 3.0 port. If you are using a USB 2.0 with USB 3.0 stick, well, it might be faster than the standard USB 3.0 but will never reach the standard USB 3.0 with USB 3.0 port. In short, don’t waste your money to get a USB 3.0 if you only have USB 2.0 port. And don’t even buy a USB 3.0 USB drive if you are not going to use it for time-critical or data-heavy things anyway.

So, how to choose USB 3.0? As we all know, not every USB 3.0 in the market share the same quality. There might be some slow USB 3.0. Yes, they are still USB 3.0 because the speed is still within the range of USB 3.0 but they might be at the border of USB 3.0 and USB 2.0. In other words, instead of getting such so-called USB 3.0 at a pricey price, just go for an affordable, better performing USB 2.0 drives.
Just remember three things. The first thing to consider in choosing a good USB 3.0 is the price. You have to pay sufficiently if you want the same value of return. High chances for low-priced USB 3.0 will always be those at the edge of speed frame, which is not worthy to get. Secondly, look carefully on the logo on the side. It should be branded if it’s a good USB 3.0. Last thing to remember is the spec. Only those trustworthy brands will list out the transfer rate of data on the spec sheet.
In SanDisk, there are several model of USB 3.0 that you might consider. 128GB SanDisk Extreme PRO has a fast transfer rate which enable you to download 1000 photos in less than 35 seconds which is equals to download a full-length movie in 8 seconds. With a little pricey price, it comes with SanDisk SecureAccess software which provides password protection and a cool aluminium case.
Down on budget? Then you should in these models. SanDisk Extreme, the step down version of SanDisk Extreme PRO, it is available in 16GB to 64GB. The transfer speed is slightly slower than the Extreme PRO, which downloads a full-length movie in about 9 or 10 seconds.
SanDisk Ultra with the read speed of up to 100MB per second, it will take maybe 40 seconds to download a movie. However, it’s still 10 times faster as compared to a standard USB 2.0 stick. SanDisk Ultra Fit has a similar performance to SanDisk Ultra but smaller in size.

Sidenote here to those who think everything running on USB 3.0 should be better. This is a very common misconception.
Take the analogy as USB 3.0 having much more lanes than USB 2.0. If there number of cars (demand of device) is not going to come close to the limit of the number of lanes, why bother using a USB 3.0 port? So if you have any USB keyboard and mouse, plugging them on USB 2.0 is good enough.
