- Manufacture hydrogen by separating oxygen from distilled water
- Store those hydrogen into tanks for transportation/storage
- When required, hydrogen is fed into a fuel cell
- The fuel cell separates the electron from the hydrogen atom to form hydrogen ion
- Electron flows into a circuit, providing current, and thus giving electrical power
- Electron recombines with two hydrogen ions and oxygen to form water
Basically the process of hydrogen fuel cell is simple for the layman’s concept to be understood that there are absolutely harmless to the environment and the user. From its chemical reactions, one can prove that the only by-product produced is water, yet ideally is clean, distilled water.
There is also a booth by Horizon Fuel Cell showing a small-scale proof of concept model that hydrogen manufacturing and storage as told in steps 1 and 2 above can be done using solar cell through electrolysis – a method using electricity to separate the elements. This proof of concept shows that the entire process of hydrogen fuel cell can be totally clean and has no carbon emission.

As for the speeches, we were taken aback by the guests who gave us a true insight on what is the academy and industry doing to push the technology of hydrogen fuel cells forward. Some guest speakers even showed us their final year project and their PhD thesis about hydrogen fuel cells.

The Internal Assistant Director told us what’s the holdback on hydrogen fuel cell technology, and also gave us an insight that Japan is the world leading country to push this technology forward since about 15 years ago. This is also one of the reason why they chose to visit Japan for this year’s topic on hydrogen fuel cell.
Even the winner of Shell Eco-marathon ASIA 2014 winner – the KATAK made by UiTM was there to show off their hybrid fuel cell concept car. The KATAK is a single-seater car. Imagine if this gets to replace cars driven by people – lower carbon emission, less wastage of space if you are driving along, and also more energy- efficient. That’s the future.
