Beyerdynamic is renowned as a brand of audiophile-grade products over the century – yes, century – since the year 1924. Their T 70 p (I’ll shrink it to T70p) however is a spinoff variant from their main high impedance T70.
Seeing the T70p in its box was a sight to behold, and taking out its contents reveals yet another enclosure, but this is a soft case.
The softness of this case is something to never worry about, as the foam used for the T70p is of great quality, and can protect it from bumps. There are also some cuts for accessories to be slotted onto the foam itself.
Speaking of accessories, Beyerdynamic is kind enough to include a 3.5mm-to-1/4 inch audio jack, an airplane jack, and a bunch of manuals tucked away at the top part of the foam. I’m kinda improvising a way on how to convert this foam into a pillow now. They’re just very comfortable to sleep on!
The T70p is quite light, and certainly comes with some of the most elegant designs, yet touts its simplicity and manage to catch eyes of many.
I do like the brush aluminium looks to it, and also the two-tone accent around the earcups.
This is however one thing that annoyed me at first. There’s this huge sticker telling me which is left and right, and has 3 notches on that sticker itself for finger-feeling. Problem is, I can’t really feel those notches at all. That however wasn’t a problem when I hardwired the fact that the cable is connected to the left earcup. Crisis averted!
The earcups themselves are large, and surprisingly thin compared to other headphones. As for the materials, Beyerdynamic exclaimed that they have some of the best materials built into this piece of headphone to ensure comfort. Quoting them from their page,
…elaborate three-layer paint and the skin-friendly headband and ear pads made of micro velours emphasise the precious appearance of these headphones.
If you’re like me, you don’t even understand what they are speaking. Is it in Alien? Maybe. The only way to find out is through tests, yes? Well, what are we waiting for?!

The T70p is a pair of headphones which I actually liked. I’ve tested this pair of headphones over a huge range of usage, from talk shows to orchestral songs to electronic music. Here is my discovery through this journey.
I started off with the usual, Adventure Time by Rogue. It’s a habit of mine.
I did find that the T70p’s bass is underwhelming, and the sound bass it produces just seem odd. It’s sharp over one note of bass, and has no reverb in it – it doesn’t have the shaky feel of bass.
So I thought – hey, let’s move on to something with less bass. That’s where I moved to on something new – Battle Medley 2012 [Final Fantasy I~XIV] by the FILMharmonic Orchestra Prague. This piece alone can bring out all the greatness of the T70p, bringing out a wide soundstage right to the ears. Chimes with high notes can be heard coming from be back, the bass coming from the right side and the woodwind coming from the left side. It’s just pure bliss. Maybe you should try it out yourself too.
And the drum hits at 02:35 makes me feel as if there’s something different about this headphone. It’s great at producing these hits of drums, but not a reverb in bass like electronic music was intended for. I tested this with Salome by Andre Rieu, and I was right. The gong sound at the beginning just doesn’t have the reverb feel.
Since I did receive requests to have mainstream music tests in my audio product reviews, here are some pop music. Birthday by Katy Perry sounded excellent – her voice was emphasized nicely, the drum hits were great, and the highs are nicely complimenting the song. Superheroes by The Script again showed similar results, with the voice being the main emphasis and everything else blending nicely through the song.
I can surely tell that the frequency response is emphasized mostly on the mid-range frequencies, and skewed to the high-frequency side. Knowing this, I did try using it on video chat for many times, and the voice it produces is clear and concise, if the internet connection allows for a smooth chat.
Speaking of video chats, I’ve been on the tech show called Tech Kakis with other media, and for each session I’ve been using the T70p. Most of these sessions last longer than an hour, and I can boldly T70p’s comfort level is excellent. I found myself wearing for longer than an hour even after the talk show is complete, simply because I forgot that I had it on. It’s light enough and comfortable to the point where it feels like there’s nothing additional on the head. A+ for comfort.
For portability however, I think it’s not a great option to wear this everywhere you go, The cable is a tad longer for a tall body like mine to have no yanking while turning my head via my phone in my pocket. With that said, the cups doesn’t rotate to sit on the shoulders. Not really portable-friendly, I’d say. Though without the rotating earcups, it be compensated by its superbly flexible headband.
Though the T70p spews rainbows and sunshine, but there are actually quite a large dark cloud glooming. Its other sibling, the T70, is obviously meant for studio use, but I can understand why Beyerdynamic made a “portable” version of it, hence the T70p. It downscaled from an impedance of 250Ω to a mere 32Ω, while keeping everything else exactly the same. The looks and the price are the same – even both uses the same Tesla audio drivers.
The T70 and the T70p both costs RM2,200. Such a heavy price tag. Though I suggest anyone reading this to consider thoroughly before spending this much dough on a not-so-portable headphone on the supposedly-portable Beyerdynamic T70p. That said, they really do produce great sound over my OnePlus One, LG Nexus 4, and my laptop, with amazing comfort. Just a bit of design modification, and it’s a solid product.
