Lenovo has recently been found out to have a malware built right into the software while assembling in the factories, as researchers found out that there’s a pre-installed software dubbed Superfish, being found in Lenovo laptops sold between September 2014 to January 2015.
Superfish is a piece of software Lenovo uses to inject ads to users, but no one likes ads and certainly not when Lenovo made a security vulnerability. This software works by intercepting all of your internet data so that Lenovo can supposedly monitor your data and gather information on it, then inject curated ads back to the user. Tough luck, Lenovo.
Lenovo said that ThinkPads are not shipped with Superfish, so you can most probably relax. They also published a list of devices affected by Superfish right here.
The big question is this : how to check if I have them, and how to remove it? Follow the simple steps below :
- Visit this site to check if you are vulnerable to Superfish attacks. If it shows a negative, good! You don’t have to worry about Superfish at all!
- Update your Windows Defender through Windows Update. Microsoft claimed to have barbequed the Superfish with its latest update!
If you’re a little paranoid (like me), do a clean reinstallation of Windows. That’ll even clear out all the unnecessary bloatware and Superfish down the drain!
It is best to keep your antivirus updated to keep piranhas away from your computer. Make sure they are scheduled for daily updates!
[UPDATE]
Guess who just stepped out to take action at last? Lenovo did.
Lenovo has finally issued a Superfish removal tool (which you can download here) and the days ahead are finally bright again.
Damage however has been done by Lenovo – trust is difficult to earn, but easy to lose. Keep that in mind, Lenovo.
