This is the SonicGear Aquarius (2017) version. It’s a really flashy for a Bluetooth speaker – and there’s even a musical fountain feature too. Seriously – a musical mountain. but does its flashiness justify its price?
We should find out about it here.
Unboxing
The box is rather… colorful, in my opinion. Everything on the box itself is depicting its fountain instead of speakers. I mean, even the specs of the SonicGear Aquarius (2017)’s speakers are tiny.
Opening up the box reveals a piece of styrofoam where everything is seated on.
By everything I mean the user manual, a rubber stopper, an eyedropper, a USB cable, an aux cable, and the SonicGear Aquarius (2017) itself.
Of course… more on all of these accessories later.
As I’ve mentioned earlier, the specs are placed at a tiny part of the box itself. Nothing too outstanding here, actually.
Design
The entire speaker itself is made out of different types of plastics. At the top, it’s made out of a transparent cone-like “aquarium” with LEDs at the bottom. Somewhere between these LEDs are little slits – presumably for water to get back into the reservoir before getting pumped out through the power of music.
To have the fountain work as expected, you’ll have to fill in at about the same level as the reservoir slits.
The rest of the speaker is rather simple. That big white chunk houses the speaker drivers, whereas the colored part houses all of the buttons and ports.
You can find some of the common buttons, switches, and ports here – but they’re just way too tiny and too low. I do appreciate the fact that they’re angled to be a little more ergonomic, but it’s still quite fidgety.
Alright, back to the colors now – the main highlight.
Features
I mean – this is the most interesting part, no? A speaker with a water fountain – as stated on their product page. So how does it actually work?
It’s simple – when music is playing, the water fountain reacts accordingly. As far as my observations can tell, the water fountain only “listens” to a particular frequency of music – somewhere around the mids.
Once the fountain water pumps are “triggered”, the how high up these water go depend on the volume of the music that it’s playing.
I mean, that’s the only feature that I can highlight on this product. The speakers are… well… colorful, so to speak. And the water fountain feature is just implemented too well. Those bright LED spots? They’re the water jets. It is seen as though that water is coming out from within the LED itself!
The only downside here is that you cannot turn off the LEDs or water jets separately. You’ll have to turn off the speaker entirely.
Using the SonicGear Aquarius (2017)
Of course, the SonicGear Aquarius (2017) is a speaker after all. A wireless one, to be precise. Due to the nature of what feature it has, I don’t really see how one can bring this speaker out and about on their daily commute or travels. The part that makes sound is tiny, but most of its space is occupied by the water fountain part itself.

I don’t agree with the idea of carrying this speaker in a bag too, as there will be water slushing around.
The speaker sounds teeny and with minimal bass. At higher volumes – where the water jets start to get more intense – the sound produced is annoying. And by annoying, I mean that it sounds high-pitched and it hurts my ears. At very low volumes, yeah – it sounds acceptable, but definitely rated as “horrible sound quality” in my book.
Wrapping up the SonicGear Aquarius (2017) review
Here’s the deal – a good speaker will make the listener excited. Or as my friends state it – sexcited. Music has that effect on people – I’m not joking. While there are many different types of speakers in this world, it will take some time to find speakers with a sound signature that fits your ears.
For the price of ~RM80 over at Lazada here, I recommend you to NOT buy this speaker. Get something else instead. The SonicGear Aquarius (2017) is a speaker that just sounds way too horrible, and they’re selling the distracting aesthetics that everyone will get tired of in a matter of minutes, instead of proper sound quality.
I need to emphasize this again – do not buy if you’re expecting decent sound quality.
