cell-phone-cancer

People had been paranoid about cellphones causing brain cancer since the early days just like now people are paranoid about MSG causing headaches. What do they have in common? Well, they are both just myths that came out of nowhere or evidence.

During one of my visit to a local telco company, an engineer mentioned that during some of their installation of cellphone towers, residents around the tower would come to them and complain about having headaches. They would often put the blame and suggest that the cellphone towers being so near is giving them bad health effects. The truth is, those towers being installed, are not even powered on yet!

Recently, one analytical study was conducted in Australia to try and relate if there is any links between brain cancer and cellphone electromagnetic radiation. This particular study was conducted between 1982 to 2013 towards the Australian population.

The research shows that brain cancer rate was growing from 0% to a very slight percentage during the 70’s. However, this was before cellphones was a commodity. The data also matches other countries that were also conducting similar studies.

Until now, there has been on evidence linking cellphones and brain cancer. Not even in a 29 years duration of research. However, there will still be people who are paranoid about electromagnetic waves. I was once in an elevator and a guy got scolded for talking on the phone. His argument was that if you are talking to the phone in an elevator, it uses more power. Hence, increasing the risk of brain cancer for everybody in the elevator. Yeah.

I happen to be a ham radio operator and I’ve been exposed to almost 75 watts of electromagnetic radiation for hours at time. Just to put that in perspective, a typical cellphone will radiate around 0.6 watts to 1 watt at most. So, perhaps we will see what happens later.

Just like the MSG in food myth, cellphone and brain cancer is one on the list.
