The foldable smartphone is already here, with the Samsung Galaxy Fold and the Huawei Mate X representing two of the leading models. According to reports, the expensive devices which come in at around $1900 and $2600, respectively, have not been selling well, with around half a million of the Samsung offering sold in the first year.
This mirrors early smartphone sales before they went on to boom throughout the 2010s. Those devices were surprisingly boosted by an online casino industry that was thriving at the same time, with casino games providing a strong platform for accessing a wide variety of popular games. This industry has revitalized many forms of gameplay, with bingo being one of the most recent entries into the online gaming canon. So, could foldable smartphones now be helped by a bingo industry that is reminiscent of online casinos back then?
Bingo Could Act as a Catalyst
The online casino industry has shot to unprecedented success over the last ten years, and a lot of this has to do with how it made use of mobile technology. Developers found that the games were perfectly suited to mobile players and worked hard to make sure offerings made it onto the smaller screen. There is no doubt that both sectors helped to boost one another, as the revenue trajectories of each over the decade have risen in a similar curve.
The online bingo sector may now look at this and see an opportunity to do the same thing with foldable smartphones.
Later Generations Could Enjoy More Success
As with the first iPhone release back in 2007, initial sales of foldable smartphones have been slow. Apple only shipped 3.7 million units in the first year and 13.7 million in the second year. It was with the fourth generation in 2010 that sales suddenly spiked to 47.5 million. Foldable smartphones have so far failed to exceed this record, despite having entered a market that is hungry for the next mobile product. It’s clearly the high price point that is making it difficult for the vast majority of end-users to get hold of a device.
The journey of foldable smartphones may end up being similar to that of the iPhone. As newer generations are released, the older models will become more affordable. The technology on the future generations will also be more appealing and will attract big spenders. Of course, this all depends on whether the initial offerings can prove to be strong alternatives to traditional smartphones. According to early reports, the durable devices are forward-thinking and could be the future of the industry.
It may take a while for foldable smartphones to take off, but many experts are predicting big things for them. These new devices represent an excellent opportunity for the online bingo industry to boom further if developers can gear more of the games to this new type of screen.
