Transcend is one of the leading manufacturers of storage media – especially when it comes to SSDs. Recently, the Transcend just announced their brand new SSD230, and it is built with 3D NAND flash.
A quick recap on what 3D NAND flash is – as SSDs are made out of memory chips, it suffers the same issues as any other memory devices. Larger memory will need more chips, but we all need our SSDs to be at a certain form factor. Thus, shrinking these 2D memory chip itself to accommodate more data cells is the way to go. Sometime in the future, these 2D memory chips can’t be shrunken further with respect to Moore’s law, and thus 3D memory chips exist. In this case, it’s 3D NAND flash chips, where data cells are stacked vertically in addition to its usual 2D array.
Take 2D NAND chips as bungalows and 3D NAND chips as apartments, and you’ll have a clearer picture. This saves up a lot of physical space, scales data cell density very well, and also speeds up the read and write speeds by having a shorter path for the data to too.
Anyway, the SSD230 is a SATA-based 2.5-inch SSD with 3D NAND flash technology plus SLC-caching technology, and Transcend claims that the SSD230 to have sequential transfer speeds up to 560MB/s read and 520MB/s write. As for the 4K random read and write speeds, it can achieve up to 340MB/s thanks to a DDR3 DRAM cache that it employs. Other than that, the SSD230 has a RAID engine and LDPC (Low-Density Parity Check) coding and an ECC algorithm to keep data secure and intact.
Like any other Transcend SSDs, the user-friendly SSD Scope tool developed by Transcend is compatible with the SSD230. This tool is to keep your SSD’s health and efficiency at its top notch condition, while providing the SSD’s crucial information – S.M.A.R.T. status, diagnostic scan, and health indication. Other features that the SSD Scope includes is secure data erase, system clone, TRIM enabling, and, my favourite, firmware updates.
The Transcend SSD230 comes in 128GB, 256GB, and 512GB capacity variants, and it’s backed by Transcend’s three-year limited warranty.
