HTC is bringing their brand new flagships early this year – and they’re called the HTC U series of smartphone. It seems like HTC is reinventing themselves with the new smartphone family, starting with the HTC U Ultra and HTC U Play.
Aesthetically, they both look very similar – other than the humongous camera bump at the back of the HTC U Ultra. They both run on Android 7.0 Nougat with HTC’s latest Sense too.
HTC U Ultra
This is their new flagship device. As of now, the information surrounding the HTC U Ultra is rather scarce, but this is all that we know.
It has a 5.7-inch 1440p (2K resolution) display with Super LCD 5, Corning Gorilla glass 5 with curved edges, Qualcomm Snapdragon 821 chipset with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage. All these hardware are powered by a 3,000mAh. Nothing surprising in terms of specs.
As for the other specs, the rear-camera has a 12MP HTC UltraPixel 2 sensor with backside illumination, PDAF + laser autofocus, OIS, f/1.8 aperture, and a sapphire lens. For the selfie camera however, it has a 16MP HTC UltraPixel sensor with backside illumination. Other than that, it seems pretty standard all throughout.
One additional feature that the HTC U Ultra has is the HTC Sense Companion – an “AI for suggestions based on the things you do”, according to HTC. This is obviously to couple with the secondary display which changes according to what you’re doing.
Also, the price for this HTC U Ultra is insane – at USD $749, it translates to about RM 3339.04.
However, there is no official price of availability for Malaysia yet. All we know is that it’ll be available soon, and the price will be announced soon, according to the press release that we’ve got here.
HTC U Play
This is HTC’s mid-ranger model in the U-series of smartphones. Coming in with a 5.2-inch 1080p display with unspecified version of both Super LCD and Corning Gorilla Glass, MediaTek Helio P10 chipset with an octa-core processor, and no secondary display. It comes in two variants – 3GB of RAM and 32GB of internal storage.
As for the cameras, its rear-facing camera has a 16MP sensor with backside illumination, OIS, PDAF, and f/2.0 aperture. For its selfie camera, it has a 16MP UltraPixel sensor with backside illumination and f/2.0 aperture.
It comes in two variants too – 3GB of RAM and 32GB of internal storage, or 4GB RAM and 64GB storage.
It only has a 2,500mAh- which is a tiny amount! I personally regard the HTC U Ultra’s 3,000mAh to be a little on the low side, but 2,500mAh is just too little.
Anyway, there are no pricing or availability for the HTC U Play yet. We’ll definitely update you when we have the info.
