As the cumulative size of data around the globe grows exponentially, we need to have enough storage capacity to archive at least a good chunk of it. Home storage solutions are quite an issue – as there aren’t many options other than internal/external hard disks and the most recent addition – network attached storages. Western Digital wants to change that by bringing the My Cloud Home – a stripped down version of a NAS for those who don’t need the extra features, Sandisk iXpand Base which is an external storage-cum-charger, and a 400GB microSD card.

Let’s go through it one by one.

My Cloud Home & My Cloud Home Duo

I have to agree that a NAS is oftentimes too complex and excessive for those who just want an external storage that can be accessed everywhere without the need to bring it. I mean, it’s 2017 and the internet is pretty much everywhere, so why not access data on demand?

The My Cloud Home works similarly as a NAS like the WD DL2100 that we’ve reviewed here, but without the hassle of complicated steps to set it up and also without the excessive features like apps. Everything is controlled by the web UI or the mobile app – which makes things easier to access.

Also, you do have the features like automatically backing up pictures and videos too. The best part is that all your files are stored in your device in your home and not somewhere else. Though, that means you’ll need to have a speedy internet to host all your files.

And oh – you can even transfer files from your other external storage devices too. Card readers work fine too, apparently.

But again – the My Cloud Home only has a single hard disk. If that one hard disk fails, then all data is lost! Hence, Western Digital also offers the My Cloud Home Duo – it’s technically the same thing as the My Cloud Home but with two hard disks. The second hard disk does only one thing in particular – saves an exact copy of what’s on the first hard disk. If either one of the hard disk dies, then there’s always another backup copy always ready to serve.

SanDisk iXpand Base

This is actually an interesting product mix by SanDisk, who is now owned by Western Digital.

The iXpand Base is a charger, OTG for iPhones, and external storage – combined them all together into one single product. It sounds bizarre at first, but it’s actually a very effective mixture of two different types products.

You can charge your iPhone while backing up data – and it backs up automatically when connected, too. Knowing how horrible iPhone batteries can be, this can only mean that your data will forever be backed up at least once a day.

The SanDisk iXpand Base will be available now at Apple Premium Reseller stores, 11street, Lazada and Shopee across Malaysia with prices from RM 369.00 at 64GB, RM 529.00 at 128GB and RM 899.00 for 256GB.

400GB SanDisk Ultra microSD card

For non-iPhone users, Western Digital is launching its 400GB SanDisk Ultra microSD card, the world’s highest-capacity microSD card for use in mobile devices available in Malaysia from December 2017 onwards.

Keeping up with the demands of today’s mobile-centric lifestyle, the new SanDisk microSD card provides consumers with the freedom to capture, save and share photos, videos and apps, and enjoy offline content – all without worrying about storage limitations.

The ground-breaking 400GB SanDisk Ultra microSD card features a ten-year limited warranty and will be available in Malaysia at 11street, Lazada and Shopee starting from December 2017 with a price of RM 1,499.00. Ouch.
