ethiopia-tablet-kids

As a part of the One-Laptop-Per-Child (OLPC) program, students of Ethiopia – a poor country that has no schools – was given a Motorola Xoom tablet instead of a laptop, and they don’t even know how to read English at all. Though within 5 months, they learned how to navigate across the tablet and mess around within the OS.

They, however, are very bright-minded. By messing around within the OS, I mean by they had hacked Android OS. The camera on the Motorola Xoom given to them was disabled, but the kids at Ethiopia enabled it back – with zero instructions at all. What they did was merely just exploring around to learn the nature of the Android, then started messing with it.

As the founder of OPC Nicholas Negroponte said :

“We left the boxes in the village. Closed. Taped shut. No instruction, no human being. I thought, the kids will play with the boxes! Within four minutes, one kid not only opened the box, but found the on/off switch. He’d never seen an on/off switch. He powered it up. Within five days, they were using 47 apps per child per day. Within two weeks, they were singing ABC songs [in English] in the village. And within five months, they had hacked Android. Some idiot in our organization or in the Media Lab had disabled the camera! And they figured out it had a camera, and they hacked Android.”

Amazing, aren’t they?
