When we first published the HONOR 20 Lite review about a week ago, we have a lot of comments saying that the phone itself is quite similar to the HONOR 10 Lite and is priced quite high for what it is offering. I do understand where you are coming from and why you are saying that – and I do agree with some of them.
Let’s put up an imaginary scale and balance out the pros and cons of the HONOR 20 Lite with the comments we read. Once again, this all revolves around the price tag of RM949. With this price tag in mind, it sets an expectation on getting what we paid for.
Some of the good points
This is HONOR’s first ever smartphone that comes with a triple camera setup for the rear. Of course, one of it is a depth sensor to assist in taking beautiful photos with bokeh. With that said, the new HONOR 20 Lite is also the company’s first smartphone with an ultrawide angle camera.
The HONOR 20 Lite does take some decent shots. We have a whole album here to testify that. Here is an example.
Then there’s the 32MP selfie camera too. While I do admit that I am definitely not a fan of selfies, it gets the job done decently fine under adequately-lit conditions. And hey – it has a tiny waterdrop notch only! Take a look down below.
Then comes the performance. The Kirin 710 performs somewhere between the Snapdragon 636 and Snapdragon 660, and is adequate enough for a smooth gaming experience on most games.
Some not so good points
One of the complaint is the 3,400mAh battery. While I do agree that HONOR could’ve included a larger battery, it can still last you a day’s use in most cases. Why? Because it is using the Kirin 710, a pretty power-efficient chip.
We did a post here saying why a 3,000mAh battery can last longer than what you think. To summarize, the design of a chipset plays an important role in power efficiency and battery consumption, hence that is why the Kirin 710 is able to last for a day’s use.
As for the micro USB port, I have to say that it doesn’t really matter much. Many of the products that we own are still using micro USB, while peripherals are only starting to make the switch to USB-C. Transition periods are tough, and unfortunately we will own products that are using micro USB and others that are using USB-C.
Is it still a worthy purchase?
Once again like what we have said – for the price of RM949, the HONOR 20 Lite offers something unique here. It’s definitely not the cheapest mid-range smartphone in the market, but offers the only one that has an ultrawide angle camera for this price range.
For ultrawide angle camera smartphones, it’s either this or shilling out a lot more to get higher-end devices.
It is available in both Phantom Blue and Phantom Red colors as well. Also, they did announce a collaboration with AAPE and brings forth two more funky designs.
