The year 2020 is upon us and before we move into the new decade, Dell Technologies Research published their findings on how emerging techs can transform how we live our everyday lives by the year 2030. These are still forecasts, but forecasts are made based on existing data that we have and extrapolated, so they’re not baseless.
Dell Technologies Research has a couple of key takeaway points regarding this topic:
- We’ll work together with machines partnership with machines, driven by the uptake of emerging technologies like 5G, AI, Extended Reality (XR) and IoT.
- Sentient cities, connected mobility and robots going mainstream
- 1,100 business leaders in Asia Pacific & Japan, including Malaysia, weighed in on the Future of Connected Living research; 80% (82% in Malaysia) expect they will restructure the way they spend their time through automation; 63% (67% in Malaysia) welcome day-to-day immersion in virtual and augmented realities.
- Organizations and governments must act now to overcome challenges and prepare for the digital future
This research is done in partnership with Institute for the Future (IFTF) and Vanson Bourne, while also having 1,100 business leaders across 10 countries in Asia Pacific & Japan (APJ), including Malaysia, participated in this survey.
IFTF and a forum of global experts forecast that technologies such as edge computing, 5G, AI, Extended Reality (XR) and IoT will combine to create five major “shifts” in the coming decade. The “shifts” are as such:
- Networked Reality: Over the next decade, the cyberworld will become an overlay on top of our existing reality and extend beyond televisions, smartphones and other displays.
- Connected Mobility and Networked Matter: Vehicles will be mobile computers and essentially are self-driving while we are able to do other things inside the vehicle.
- “Sentient Cities”: Cities become alive because of the smart objects and self-reporting systems, which ties in to the IoT aspect.
- Agents and Algorithms: Everyone will be supported by a personalised “operating system for living” that helps us complete our tasks more effiently to free up time.
- Robot with Social Lives: Robots as partners and companion to enhancing and extend our human capabilities to its limits. Essentially, the robots become testers and learn exponentially quick with its hivemind, hence innovating at an exponential rate as well.
Most of these “shifts” aren’t that difficult to see it coming our way in the next few years too. They’re already happening – like the networked reality. It’s convenient and obviously, more and more devices are going to be connected with the internet – like electronic billboards that we can see around the city and highways nowadays. It saves time to remotely manage them rather than having to go on a grand tour to swap the ads.
Self driving cars are already happening as many consumers (me included) are begging for the day self-driving cars are feasible. Think about it – if all cars are self-driving, then there is no need for traffic lights. No traffic accidents. Everyone just stays in their car and do whatever they want, without wasting time and energy to get stuck in the jam. Every road is an autobahn. Tesla is spearheading that direction and I love it.
Points 3 and 4 are already happening though at a much smaller scale. As everything becomes “networked” together, we can then have our meetups and location tracked and pinpointed to the minutes of the clock.
Of course, all of these means that there are no concerns regarding privacy and the foreseeable Orwellian way of living. Once again, this is still just a forecast on how things will be in the year 2030.
