While we haven’t heard from HTC for quite some time – someone discovered that HTC’s website does not work, citing an error of Http/1.1 Service Unavailable. From what we can deduce, HTC’s website has been down for more than a day. But it’s fixed now, so there’s nothing to worry about.

The original tweet that brought this issue to light was from Jason Dunn, who posted this tweet on 2nd January 2020 at 11.11am.

Then, HTC only responded on 3rd January 2020 at 7.48am, stating that they’re looking into the issue. From what we have tested, the issue was just remedied a while ago.

From what we can find out, HTC’s website was previously working on 31st December 2019 at 21:21:49, as shown by the Wayback Machine. Anything attempts to cache in the year 2020 are unsuccessful.

There were comments saying that this is the end of an era – HTC just proved that they’re still alive and kicking as the website is now fully functional. We discovered that typing in “htc.com” directly doesn’t work – but typing in “www.htc.com” works. But there’s a twist.

HTC website down

This is just a small issue where entering HTC’s website without the “www” part. However, what’s alarming is how long this issue persisted. This seems to be an issue with redirection configured on their website – but this issue persisted for more than a day now.

But then again, at least we know what’s going on. There’s nothing to be alarmed about yet.

UPDATE: We dug further into the rabbit hole.

We found out that “htc.com” goes to the IP address of 114.30.34.31, which is the webserver host’s IP address. We know that it doesn’t work already.

Then, we found out that “www.htc.com” is pointed towards a completely different server. It goes to “e12069.b.akamaiedge.net”. While that might look like a bunch of gibberish, it is actually an Akamai server. HTC is using Akamai’s CDN services.

In short, “www.htc.com” is showing a previously-saved website by Akamai. HTC’s main website is still down.
