In Samsung, there is an in-house incubation program called C-Lab that has been nurturing ideas from Samsung employees since 2012. The C-Lab is divided into two parts – C-Lab Inside and C-Lab Outside. There are a total of 9 different exhibits from different teams within the Samsung C-Lab. And the lifechanging SelfieType is one of them.

From 7th January to 10th January, Samsung will be showcasing all of the C-Lab teams’ projects. Samsung also invites everyone to go have a look and give feedback regarding their innovations.

The SelfieType is quite bizarre. We initially thought it is those typical laser projection keyboard where we have to hit specific areas of the table to register a keystroke. But no – the SelfieType seems to be a fundamentally different way of achieving “air typing”.

Introducing, typing in the air a la an air guitarist – but we’re air typists now. The SelfieType team says that this is a “keyboardless keyboard” whereby it uses both the smartphone’s RGB and selfie cameras to start typing. This means both the Galaxy S10+ (review) and the Galaxy Fold (review) are compatible with SelfieType.

Since the technology requires only the ubiquitous hardware found in many smartphones these days, SelfieType can also be extended to tablets, laptops and various other mobile devices.

To start using SelfieType, you just need a compatible smartphone to be standing on a flat surface, then fold your hands out in the typing position. Then, you can already start typing. The proprietary SelfieType AI engine will analyze the finger movement and translate them into keystrokes in accordance with the QWERTY keyboard layout as shown on the phone.

CES2020 SelfieType

The SelfieType keyboardless keyboard is currently developed for English only, but the developers are looking to further expand to other languages too. Since everyone’s typing posture is varied, the SelfieType team is looking to further improve the accuracy by learning the user’s individual typing style and adapt to it.

In a way, having a technology like SelfieType means I can start typing ergonomically and quickly without having my thumbs cramped onto the smartphone screen. I’m looking forward to testing the SelfieType keyboard myself.
