Over the course of these few weeks, flip phones are back in the headlines become of the Motorola Razr and the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip. Currently, the Motorola Razr is already in the market – and the hinge worries many people.
Max Weinbach of XDA Developers has pointed out that the hinge “doesn’t sound good” and the hinge also feels “flimsy” while including a video on what he meant.

And then, Nirave also tweeted his own retail unit of the Motorola Razr, highlighting the same issue. Both of them have the same squeaky sound when trying to fold/unfold the phone.
This hinge is made to “sink” into the body of the phone, so there is no visible gap when the phone is folded. That means the screen will have to bend at even more parts of the screen, hence Max Weinbach also pointed out that there is a total of two major creases. We can indeed see another minor crease where the phone folds, though.
We reviewed the Galaxy Fold last year and we said that the crease wasn’t visible when we look at it directly – like how phones are meant to be used. But when we swiped our finger across the hinge, we can feel the crease. I’m not sure how the screen of the Motorola Razr feels since we tend to swipe up and down more than left and right.
Moreover, Motorola also stated that “bumps and lumps are normal” since it is made to bend. That is quite a bold statement since none of the foldable displays have any “bumps and lumps” as of now.
Whatever the case may be, the Motorola Razr is currently still the one and only flip phone with a foldable display that is available in the market. We’ll have to wait until the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip t obe out in the market before any solid comparisons can be made.
11th February is the day.
UPDATE: Here’s how the hinge sounds after a week
According to this new tweet, the hinge creaks even more now after a week’s use. However, do keep in mind that this is a very aggressive way of demonstrating the hinge squeaking and creaking.
We’ll definitely need to test it for ourselves – if it ever comes to the Malaysian market, that is.
