It’s finally here. The device that was first known as Bloom by leakers, it is officially announced as the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip. This is Samsung’s second foldable device, but it takes on a completely different form factor – and Samsung has implemented a lot of new technologies into the Galaxy Z Flip.
We have to talk about folding first. The Galaxy Z Flip takes the smartphone that we have now and folds it in half. Samsung improved on the hinge and now has something called Hideaway Hinge. Like a laptop’s hinge, the Galaxy Z Flip can now be left open at a range of angles. The hinge now also uses fibers that repel dust and dirt.
Since the hinge can stay open at a range of angles, Samsung has implemented something called Flex Mode. It separates the display into two 4-inch segments along the folding part. Essentially, it’s multitasking. Samsung has also updated the SDK so that developers can take advantage of this new feature.
This new hinge can also make the Galaxy Z Flip become a tripod and stand on its own to take long shutter pictures like light painting or timelapse videos. Just put the phone on a grippy surface to prevent the phone from slipping out of place.
The new hinge also allows us to do video calls without holding the phone. Since it can prop up on its own, we can leave the phone on the table, get the hinge on a comfortable angle, and we can talk for hours.
