So there’s this game. It’s a few years old at this point. It’s called Plague Inc. It’s a game about how different types of diseases infect people from around the world and eventually kill everyone. Since the recent coronavirus, or COVID-19 outbreak, Plague Inc. sales skyrocketed. But China decided to remove plaque Inc. on the Apple App Store.
“But what’s the reason for removing the game?” That’s the question we all have, and the reason is unjustified.
According to Kotaku, the China Cyberspace Administration removed Plague Inc., calling it “illegal content”.
The developers behind Plague Inc., Ndemic Creations, has released a statement on their website which confirms that the game is indeed removed in China right now. Citing the statement, it states:
It’s not clear to us if this removal is linked to the ongoing coronavirus outbreak that China is facing. However, Plague Inc.’s educational importance has been repeatedly recognised by organisations like the CDC and we are currently working with major global health organisations to determine how we can best support their efforts to contain and control COVID-19.
I personally think that the game shouldn’t be removed, but instead given for free for everyone to play since there’s a virus outbreak right now. Within that game, it highlights the importance of hygiene as it is a common way for infections to happen.
Citing once again from Ndemic Creation’s statement:
… Plague Inc.’s educational importance has been repeatedly recognised by organisations like the CDC and we are currently working with major global health organisations to determine how we can best support their efforts to contain and control COVID-19.
Personally, the game is educational for me as it goes through the strengths and weaknesses of how diseases spread while learning the most effective way to transmit the disease. Think of Plague Inc. as education for gamified.
But hey – that doesn’t stop me from promoting that game.
