We have a bunch of new mid-range smartphones announced recently, even though MWC 2020 was canceled. One of those smartphones was Xiaomi’s latest Redmi Note 9S. The company had an online announcement and Malaysia was one of the main focus during that announcement.

Redmi Note series of smartphones are famous among the budget-conscious smartphone enthusiasts – which is why the Redmi Note series is one of the best-selling worldwide. Cumulatively, they sold over 110 million units! That’s why the Redmi Note 7 and Redmi Note 8 series are both top 10 global smartphones in 2019 – according to Canalys.

Despite being a mid-range smartphone with such an affordable price tag, here are a few reasons why the Redmi Note 9S is the smartphone to buy at the price of RM799.

Redmi Note 9S

Its big screen and beautiful design

The new Redmi Note 9S comes with a massive 6.67-inch IPS LCD DotDisplay. While it doesn’t have 90Hz refresh rate any of those fancy features, Redmi focused on the useful and practical features instead.

The 6.67-inch display has a 91% screen-to-body ratio to provide an immersive user experience – and it is also certified by TÜV Rheinland so that our eyes will be protected even after prolonged hours of usage.

That beautiful display is complemented by a beautiful design at the back too. The Redmi Note 9S is available in a few different color options – Interstellar Grey, Glacier White, and my favorite – Aurora Blue.

By the way, the Redmi Note 9S is sandwiched by Corning Gorilla Glass 5. That means you get Gorilla Glass 5 at the front and the back.

That powerful Snapdragon 720G chipset

We’ve tried the Snapdragon 720G before. This new mid-range chipset is amazing in terms of performance and power efficiency. Throughout our benchmarks, the Redmi Note 9S can reach over 278k in Antutu v8 benchmark, thanks to the new Snapdragon 720G chipset.

Coupled with up to 6GB RAM and 128GB of internal storage, you can multitask your way throughout the day without hitting any performance lags or snags!

A massive 5,020mAh battery

While multitasking is important, it’s no fun if we constantly need a power bank or charger. That is why the battery life is important. The easiest way to get long-lasting battery life is to include a battery with high capacity – and that’s why the Redmi Note 9S has a 5,020mAh battery.

For some reason, even though the Redmi Note 9S supports up to 18W for charging, Xiaomi just straight up included a 22.5W charger in the box. That means you can charge other devices at a higher speed, too. Xiaomi is really being thoughtful to all of us here.

Those cameras!

One of the most important aspects is – of course, the cameras. The Redmi Note 9S features a total of 4 cameras:

  • Quadruple rear-facing cameras
    • Main: 48MP f/1.8; PDAF
    • Ultra-wide angle: 8MP f/2.2
    • Macro: 5MP f/2.4 with autofocus
    • Depth sensor
  • Selfie camera
    • 16MP

I really love macro cameras. So far, Xiaomi is the only one to include an autofocusing lens for the macro camera. With autofocusing capability, it makes sure that the shot is always in focus. Combined with a 5MP sensor, this macro camera on the Redmi Note 9S can capture a lot of tiny details effortlessly.

This is a massive improvement over the Redmi Note 9S’s competitor smartphones in the market. Here are some picture samples.

Keeping convenient features that we all love

The new Redmi Note 9S is one of the There are many new smartphones these days that do not have the audio jack – and that’s particularly important for games as we have stated in our videos exploring Bluetooth audio latency.

Also, the Redmi Note 9S has upgraded to USB-C, just like the Redmi Note 8 series. I’m so happy to see this happening.

And alas, the new Redmi Note 9S still retains the IR blaster. It’s one of the most useful features on a smartphone. Seriously, ever since using a phone with IR blaster, I controlled my fan and air conditioner using my phone.

Redmi Note 9S

The new Redmi Note 9S is now using a side-mounted fingerprint scanner. We presume that this is to unobstructedly show the beautiful back to the world while still retaining the convenient feature of a physical fingerprint scanner.
