This might not seem like a big deal – but it actually is. The fact that Samsung Galaxy Watch – specifically the Samsung Galaxy Watch Active 2 – can now monitor blood pressure is a big step forward towards 24/7 personal health monitoring. This is especially important for early detection of potential health hazards.
Samsung Electronics announced that the Samsung Health Monitor app has been cleared by South Korea’s Ministry of Food and Drug Safety (MFDS). The app is now operating as a “software as a medical device” (SaMD) and it is a government-cleared, over-the-counter, and cuffless blood pressure monitoring application.
As of now, the Samsung Galaxy Watch Active 2 (review), with its advanced sensors, can now measure and track blood pressure. Once the Galaxy Watch Active 2 has been calibrated with a traditional cuff, we can then measure our blood pressure by just tapping on the “measure” button.
The Galaxy Watch Active 2 measures blood pressure through pulse wave analysis, which is tracked with the heart rate monitoring sensors. However, the blood monitoring isn’t exactly perfect. It still needs users to manually recalibrate the device with a traditional cuff once every four weeks.
Still, this is Samsung’s most advanced health and wellness capability thanks to more sensitive and accurate heart rate monitoring sensors on the Galaxy Watch Active 2. This is in addition to the existing health tracking feature like exercise, sleep, and stress.
As of now, high blood pressure is known to have a significant risk on the human brain, kidney, and cardiovascular diseases. I mean, most of us are sitting in front of our computer most of the time – especially since the whole “work from home” movement started.
Currently, the Samsung Health Monitor app will be available on the Galaxy Watch Active 2 within the 3rd quarter and will progressively expand to upcoming Galaxy Watch devices.
