After countless leaks about the Moto X, it was finally announced on the 1st of August 2013, which pretty much just became a confirmation of a majority of the leaks we covered previously. Though some of the impossible features like custom hardware indeed became something like custom colours and whatnot.

This is the first phone that is officially released by Motorola after recognizing themselves as a Google company. The style of the video, the font and even the website became more Google-like, which is definitely a good thing. Without further crap, let’s jump right to what makes this phone great.

Specifications

  • 4.7 inch AMOLED display at 720p (1280×720 pixels)
  • 2200mAh battery
  • 10MP Clear Pixel
  • Android 4.2.2
  • Dual-core 1.7GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro + Motorola’s very own X8 system
  • 2GB RAM
  • Weighs 130 grams
  • Free 50GB storage on Google Drive for two years

Funny thing is, due to LTE bands varying across countries and carriers, the Moto X’s support for LTE in Malaysia is still unknown for now.

Design however the way you like it

The only way to describe the beauty of this is through a poem which I made a few minutes ago.

Moto X is red,Moto X is blue.Colour spectrum is yours to choose,If you know what hue to use.

Yeah, it’s a horrible poem but I hope you get the idea. You have literally more than 200 combinations of colours to choose from! You can choose the back panel’s colour, the front panel’s colour, the accent and even a custom earphone colour to go along with the colour you just chose for your Moto X.

Take a look at the video on how awesome it is!

Always listening and showing

You might have seen a similar feature on the Samsung Galaxy phones where you can enable a feature that makes the screen show up the notifications by just swiping your hands across the screen. On the Moto X however, the screen subtly shows you the alerts you have. The best part is, they implemented the Google Glass feature of always listening, where you can just say “OK Google Now” and the phone goes into voice command mode. All this, with no hands.

Most impractically efficient way to start the camera

Motorola made this phone to really stand out from other phones in terms of its exclusivity and features. You get all sorts of bells and whistles right on this phone. If you want to take a photo, just flick the device and it’ll automatically go to the camera app, ready for action. This means there will be no extra buttons. It’s all software magic. Combined with their 10MP Clear Pixel, what can go wrong, right?

What we think

The Moto X is a nice phone, going from $199 which is approximately RM643 in direct conversion. Given the shipments and other hidden charges, probably about RM1,000. Based on the specs, the Moto X isn’t something that will satisfy those who have the need for speed, but only for those who wants features and a great accessory to go along with as it is a mid-range phone.

Custom colours and custom design where you can even choose real wood definitely is something special. Based on the looks of the Moto X Maker website however, it seems that the custom-everything option is only available in the U.S. and elsewhere where Google Play Store works.

Also, this phone will be quite reliant on Internet connectivity, but given that the always ready feature is most probably used at home instead of outdoors, this isn’t something to worry about. The quick camera launch however will definitely be something that I will use very often.

As for the 4G part, there are no confirmation that it will work in Malaysia. On a earlier FCC leak suggests that the Moto X model dubbed as XT1053, supports LTE bands 2 and 17, where Malaysia uses LTE band 3 and 7, depending on carrier.

Until now, there are no words of the official availability and price in Malaysia.

  1. felt like unbelivevable if the price is around 1500..is that true..because the specs looks high end for a mid range phone..nevertheless, if that true thats a damn good..

  2. Well, there’s no use in knowing if we ain’t getting the full-fledged phone. The asian model is dubbed “lesser spec-ed” than this. Can’t imagine that. And google’s being a d for non us markets. lol
