Sudio has been a maker of wireless audio devices for years now. Today we have the Sudio Nio – the company’s latest true wireless earbuds that is surprisingly lower in price. So, let’s take a look at the Sudio Nio.
By the way, Nio means nine in Swedish.
Okay, let’s start off with the unboxing experience. It’s a fairly simple one, honestly. We have the typical Sudio style of packaging – clean and minimalist design overall. Now, Sudio sent us all 4 colors of the Nio, but we’re only unboxing and testing out the Sand color because I think it’s unique.
So, opening up the box we have the Sudio Nio itself – obviously – and then an accessories box. The Sudio Nio is unexpectedly tiny. I mean, my entire palm can cover the Sudio Nio with extra room to spare.
The case is made entirely out of glossy plastic to which I have to admit, I’m not a fan of because it will get hairline scratches easily, and they’re really easy to spot since it’s shiny and reflective. Mine is already pretty beat up since I put it in my bag’s pouch area alongside my wireless mouse.
But, there is a lot to like here. The case has an indicator LED at the bottom front, and the pairing button is at the bottom of the case.
The USB-C charging port is on the right side of the case and I truly appreciate their choice here as we don’t have to go through the Apple Magic Mouse charging situation.
Opening up, we can see that the earbuds themselves are also very space-efficient here as both of them are parked tightly side by side. And yet because of how the lid opens up far to the back and also doesn’t collapse back instantly.
The earbuds are fairly easy to take out and put back in – but I do wish they’re flipped and have the speaker port facing inward. It’s just a preference thing that I have.
Now – let’s finally only talk about the buds. The Sudio Nio is an open design with a very recognizable design but thanks to its colors, I think it’s unique. One of my favorite though, is the new Sudio Nio in the Aurora color. It was only released recently in conjunction with the Aurora Live Concert that you can actually watch on YouTube right now.
The Sudio Nio also has wingtips! These wingtips are especially useful to prevent the earbud from falling out of the ear while doing rigorous activities – like jogging or just running up and down the stairs. Sudio also included a total of 4 different wingtip sizes, the usual S, M, L sizes – and one more that just acts as a protective cover.
Personally, the default M size wingtip fits perfectly and comfortably for me.
The Sudio Nio is also a no-frills type of wireless earbuds. There is no proximity sensor, no ANC, no nothing. Just pure good sound quality. And it actually sounds good to the point where I’m impressed.
I have always liked these open-style earbuds a lot more than closed ones, and I know – it’s going to leak sound and have less bass – I know, but the Sudio Nio managed to still retain most of the bass and have great mids and highs too.
I listened to my usual big band jazz and also some of the older electronic music that I have in my playlist – I recommend you to check out Rhodz – and I enjoyed all of them.
But the gesture controls on the Sudio Nio is what I don’t like. The touch area is not immediately obvious and cannot be felt with my fingertips. It’s slightly below the gold circle. And looking at it from an angle, there’s a slightly matte finish on that touch-sensitive area.
The controls available are fine, though. We get the usual touch once to play/pause, double touch left or right to go to the previous or next song respectively, and triple-tapping left or right to adjust the volume down or up.
The last one is something that I ended up adjusting once and never again because I feel that it’s clunky.
At the end of the stem is where we can find the microphone – which actually sounds good since the microphone is pointed down towards the mouth. Have a listen by watching our video at the top of this review.
As for battery life, I got about 5 hours’ worth of listening time on a comfortable listening volume out of a single charge – which I think is amazing for its size. The case – with its super tiny size – manages to charge the earbuds for another 4 times – totaling up to 25 hours of total playtime. That’s amazing.
Finally, the price. At RM359 – I’m very impressed by what the Sudio Nio manages to do. It has zero bells and whistles, it sounds good and has a great microphone, comfortable to wear, and has wingtips to prevent it from falling off my ears.
I mean, for this type of open style wireless earbuds, I think the Sudio Nio is the best choice right now – especially since the limited-edition Aurora color is also at the same RM359.
I just wish that Sudio went back with physical buttons or touch panels as big as the Sudio Fem, because I also love that pair of wireless earbuds.
