As many of us know, Android 12 is upon us. With it, comes a lot of new features. As brands scramble to chase the pointless title of “first to update to Android 12”, we have OPPO with the ColorOS 12.
We have ColorOS 12 Beta installed on this Find X3 Pro. It’s still using a build from the Android Developer Preview channel, but it’s pretty close to the final product.
So, let’s take a quick tour and see what’s new with ColorOS 12.
Now I put a lot of emphasis software when it comes to phones because that is the one thing that we all will interact with when we pick up our phones. I think many people will remember that OnePlus is “merging” with OPPO (as if they aren’t from the same company to begin with) and they will also merge OxygenOS with ColorOS.
I’m not sure if ColorOS 12 is considered the first “merged” OS but that’s besides the point.
The Color OS 12 comes with a few different changes here and there but I think overall, it looks like a cleaned-up version of ColorOS 11.
OPPO touts something called “inclusive design” which comes with a cleaner, more spacious UI which also resembles Samsung’s One UI.
OPPO also cleaned up the settings menu so that it is easily recognizable as each item is represented by a colorful circle with its logo inside. Each color is vibrant and the spacing is also well done.
In terms of new productivity-related features, we have PC mode but that too is not available in our current build of ColorOS 12, so we can’t show it to you. It’s technically quite similar to Windows 10’s Your Phone app, so I’m not sure why OPPO developed another version of the same app.
Since Android 12 focuses on privacy, OPPO decided to follow and integrate all the privacy features too. If let’s say a camera is in use, then it’ll display a little notification at the top right corner, which eventually becomes a distinct green dot, telling you that the camera is in use.
OPPO also developed something called “anti-peeping notification” that combines a few different sensors to determine that you’re in a public area, then it’ll hide message previews automatically. I’m not sure how this feature will work since our version of ColorOS 12 doesn’t have this feature.
But yeah, that’s a quick look at OnePlus – I mean OPPO’s new ColorOS 12. It feels very similar to ColorOS 11 with a few visual changes here and there with some new features sprinkled on top – nothing major, I’d say.
OPPO also made the promise of providing updates for their devices, but they’re much more… how do I say this… discriminatory against their own products?
