I think Samsung did a fantastic last year in pushing the Galaxy Watch4 series into the mainstream. It starts at a very low price of just RM899 and was also included as a free gift for everyone that purchased the Galaxy S22 series of smartphones. Better yet, the new WearOS 3 on the Galaxy Watch4 series was such a huge improvement that many people just upgraded.
Then comes the new Galaxy Watch5 series. It has the base version Galaxy Watch5 and also the Galaxy Watch5 Pro. We also have a video version of this piece of this article so that you can watch it instead of reading it.
Galaxy Watch5
Introducing the new Galaxy Watch5. It is available in two different sizes – either 40mm or 44mm, just like the Galaxy Watch4. It is now available in more colors as well – but varies between sizes of the watch.
- 40mm
- Graphite
- Pink Gold
- Silver
- 44mm
- Graphite
- Sapphire
- Silver
In terms of design, this is technically the same as the current Galaxy Watch4. It looks very similar to the one that I’m wearing now – just in a few different colors.
In terms of features, it comes with a more advanced sleep tracking feature, new one-to-one coaching for workout, sleep habits analysis, and also integration with SmartThings so that the software can “train” our sleeping habits to be healthier.
We also have the body composition analysis feature – just like the Galaxy Watch4 series.
A few big upgrades is that the screen is now covered by a piece of sapphire crystal and the body of the watch is made out of aluminium.
Samsung also quoted that the Galaxy Watch5 has 30% faster charging, but I have not seen the charger or tested it out yet – so I can’t make any comments.
However, the Galaxy Watch5 does come with a larger battery for both the 40mm and 44mm versions too.
The strap of the Galaxy Watch5 is also kept the same at 20mm so we can reuse all the straps from the Watch4 on the new Watch5.
Galaxy Watch5 Pro
This is a brand new path that Samsung wants to take with their smartwatches. The Galaxy Watch5 Pro is at a 45mm size but it is aimed towards ruggedness, as shown in one of Samsung’s promotional images for the watch.
It has all of the aforementioned features mentioned for the Galaxy Watch5, and it also comes with the sapphire crystal screen – but the entire watch is made out of a titanium body.
Personally, I have no idea why the bezel is so big but it’s raised so maybe provides a bit of protection for the display?
The battery on the Galaxy Watch5 Pro is at a massive 590mAh so I think that it can potentially last for 3 days of usage in a single charge.
That massive battery is especially useful since it has a few new features that heavily rely on the GPS – like route workout, turn-by-turn navigation, and also track back. The last feature is literally doing what its name suggests – backtracking.
It is a feature made for those who often go around and trek paths that do not have any trails like forests and mountains, so this feature tracks your entire path so you can backtrack your way back home.
The Galaxy Watch5 Pro also comes with a D-Buckle watch strap that reminds me of the classical watch’s buckle straps with a clasp. Instead of having a physical metal clasp that snaps in place, Samsung uses magnets instead.
If you do not prefer such a strap, then you can change it to something else too. It supports the same 20mm watch straps as the Galaxy Watch4 series and also the Galaxy Watch5.
