Intel’s biggest highlights a couple of days ago are none other than the 13th Gen Intel Core ‘Raptor Lake’ desktop CPU and Z790 chipset reveal. While a company has to do what it must to keep the business alive, at least no one expected they are having some fun with Samsung as the Korean electronic giant reveals a special “slidable PC” demo at the Innovation 2022 conference.
The bamboozle moment comes after the CEO of Samsung Display, JS Choi, joins Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger and shows off something that is a long rectangular shape at first but slowly extends/expands/rolling out/sliding out, whatever you call it, into a nice “almost” perfect square form factor.
Calling it “The world’s 17-inch slidable OLED display for PCs globally”, it would be too far-fetched to assume that you could have a desktop PC display that just slides open like an unrolling magic scroll so what JS Choi is talking about is actually those 2-in-1 detachable laptops with a tablet-like shape such as the Microsoft Surface Go 3, for example.
As the prototype demo just shows what the fabrication technology is capable of churning out a finished product, no other info is actually revealed at that showcase like resolution, aspect ratio, PPI, brightness levels, durability test results – everything that a commercial product needs, which means that the slidable display is still within the trial and error phase.
Interestingly, the fact that Samsung chooses to enforce the ideology of slidable displays not onto smartphones but PCs could be a subtle hint of a clear distinction between families of products – one revolutionary tech for each.
And just from my curious self. It seems that you’ll need quite some force to slide the display but could be just me.
